    Windy day double

Great job! That's tough waiting them out to come from that far away ... always seems much longer than it actually is. Impressed your buddy waited long enough for the bird to get on top of your bird. I'd have probably shot as he was running in!

    Kansas Hunt

Nice job! I'm headed down to Kansas in a couple of weeks with two buddies. We've got access to a bunch a private land a half-hour north of Manhattan and typically get two birds apiece. Can't wait!

    Okoboji/Spencer Area

Go south of Spencer along the Little Sioux river valley. Sioux Rapids, Linn Grove, Peterson .... any of those areas have timber and deer/turkeys. Probably need to knock on some doors but you should be able to secure some decent places to hunt. Fishin' at the Lakes is great. Lived in Estherville...

    Blinds

I picked up a Double Bull T2 in groundswat at Sportsman's Warehouse in Ankeny on clearance for $99! They had 2 of them and now I wish I'd have bought them both.

    gun or bow? why?

Plan to do both for the first time. Bought a new G5 bow and a Double-Bull T2 and will be going out with an archery only tag on April 16th until I connect. Also plan to do 4th season and will probably use the gun first. Also have a trip to NE Kansas planned and we seem to have the best luck...

    monsters in monona county

I was over in my home town of Onawa (Monona County seat) during first deer season and heard some coffee shop talk about a couple of big deer taken. There lot's of big deer around Monona county. The #2 Iowa non-typical shotgun deer (240 taken in 1996) was shot near my uncle's farm just south of...

    Movement Update...

Saw a small buck trailing a doe across a picked beanfield just west of I-35 north of Ellsworth on the way to Minneapolis on Sunday morning ... about 9 a.m. Only saw a couple of deer that had been hit and laying along the road.

    STOP Shooting Does

A couple have mentioned the loss of habitat and while I didn't spend much time looking, I found at least one source that indicated that Iowa has lost a million acres of CRP in the last couple of years because of increased grain prices. If you look at that kind of habitat loss statewide, but...

    Antlerless Licenses

Picked up two antlerless licenses today for Late Muzzle ... one for Boone and one for Story. They are going fast so if you're hunting counties with surplus does, you better hurry. Check here to see how many licenses are left...

    Thoughts on deer numbers...

G6, the predators may take a few but it's loss of habitat that's the real problem. When you consider the 10's of thousands of acres of CRP that've been put back into production, it's no wonder populations are down. And when the habitat that's left is road ditches and other low spots, a wet...

    Bigfoot?!

Years ago, I went bow hunting up in the Loess Hills near Onawa. A couple nights before, I'd seen the movie "American Werewolf in London." Well, it happened to be a full moon and right before I was getting ready to leave at dark, the coyotes started up. I was more than a little creeped out and...

    Any Archers Paying Attention?
