    Iowa's new rifle season

They could steal Scent-lok's motto: "Forget the wind, just hunt."

    Back Fat

The buck I dressed out from Saturday's hunt had some fat; about 3/4" thick at most but it was on the top of the rump with only a very thin layer over the back/loins. Definitely not as much as I've seen in past years.

    Late Muzzleloader Strategies?

Late afternoon on a food source is probably the best. If you can play the wind right in the staging area, that's even better. Late muzzle is also a great time to still hunt/stalk. Especially after a fresh snow. Go to the food source and follow the tracks back to the bedding area. Move slow...

More qdm, more does & more good eats!

Congrats Larry!! Even better than last year? I am just waiting for the day when I can spend more time out hunting, though I doubt I'll ever have that kind of opportunity in a four-day period!

    Heater Body Suit?

Might be worth buying a sleeping bag and doing a little modifying. Cut out a triangle to form the legs, stitch up the top for the shoulders. I know I've seen camo sleeping bags on sale.

Tips, Equipment for Processing your Harvest

I've had a vacuum sealer on my Christmas list the past couple of year's so hopefully it will be under the tree this year. My brother-in-law has one and there's no better way to make sure those loins stay in primo shape for grilling next summer!!! Sam's Club has commercial level plastic and...

    Monsters Under Pressure

I'd be in a small windbreak of an abandoned farm place during the night and sneak out before sun-up to a nearby brushy terrace on a south-facing slope with good view of the surrounding area during the day. Oh, there's a picked cornfield between the two spots and the terrace has some snowmelt in...

    Options for 2006?

Willie, Are you sorry you asked yet? Access and incentives to hunt in problem areas seems to be the recurring theme here. To encourage more doe harvest in these areas, provide the following incentives to hunters: 1. Free or reduced price licenses in target areas. 2. Extended early...

    Options for 2006?

It appears to be an ongoing problem in the same counties from year to year. Dropping price will help, but some counties will still have more than a thousand unsold licenses. You might have to give them away in these areas to get does harvested ... or maybe buy two and get the third one for free...

    Binoculars

Ditto to what Timberpig said on the Crooked Horn straps. I used to hate wearing even compact binos because they killed my neck. But now I carry 8X50s and sometimes forget I have them on. Well worth the $18.

    Antlerless License Status

With the bonus Thanksgiving antlerless season coming up, I thought you guys might appreciate a rundown of how many counties have sold out and how many licenses remain. Of the 103,000 originally available, 48905 have been sold, meaning there's still 54095 available.

    scopes

Muddy, If you plan to hunt mostly timber here in Iowa, I'd look at a 1.5 - 4.5 variable. It's nice to open up wider to acquire the target, then zoom in if you need it. If you're under 200 yards (and typically under 100), a 9 power scope will cause you more grief than help. I've got a BSA...

    Tag Question

The Drurys own at least 1,500 acres southwest of Osceola and lease about twice that. I've also heard that Terry has a house in Grand River... however, I don't think he's considered a resident. On their web site, Terry lists Bloomsdale, MO as his home and Mark lists St. Louis.

    Gray Fox

Been about 10 years since I saw a grey. I think the increase in coyotes has dropped both red and grey populations.
