Didnt expect this on my trail cam!!!!

Wow. I really don't want to see one of those when hiking to my stands in the dark. Cool pics.

    Plans for opening weekend?

On my place, buck activity doesn't happen until mid Oct. It is only 20 acres and I don't want to burn my stands. So, I normally wait a few weeks to begin. I did that last year (very hard to wait) and saw chasing on my first sit. I'll do the same this year.

    First Cat

My place in Ringgold Co is full of cats. I get pics on a pretty regular basis and I see them in person on quite a few hunts. They are really cool to see and watch. Back when I trapped (around 2005 to 2015), I caught a couple in Madison county. Had to let one go before you could keep them...

    Chestnut planting

I started all of mine with tubes. Did a great job on protecting them. But year 3 I noticed the leaves inside the tubes were wet and browning. Tubes clearly didn’t have enough air holes. I ditched the tubes and caged them. I put window screen around each tree base to protect from mice...

    Cheaper Cams to Replace Moultries

This helps. I had one old Browning that lasted forever that I liked. Never went back but may now. Didn't really mind Mountrie, but when Microsoft did something that messed up the pic formatting, it pushed me to switch. Can't believe Moultrie hasn't come out with a fix of some sort.

    Cheaper Cams to Replace Moultries

Wondering what cams are out there that are "relatively cheap" that I could pick up that can replace my Moultries. I actually like my cams. They work, take decent pics, have been fairly reliable and have lasted 3+ years. Problem I have run into is that Microsoft changed something where...

    Turkey #’s & one observation….

Thanks for sharing. Horrible results from the surveys. So crazy how much poult/next loss was shown to be predation,, which is what I had thought all along. Would be nice to know what it was. Coon, skunks, possums, etc. No one traps anymore and the DNR told me to leave it alone out of...

    Timber stand bedding

Small tip I learned on my place as I'm horrible at tree ID. Like Skip said, get cans of tree paint and run through now while there are leaves. I do marking in summer and cutting/thinning in winter. I did have a state forestry guy walk my place with me to show me what he thought. He helped...

Fixed vs mechanical - one simple “new” question

As for a recommendation, not sure I can as I use G5 Montec 3 blade. They fly straight (tuned) but aren't as sharp as I would like, but you get what you pay for and there are way better ones out there. Bow tuning: Not hard if you know what you are doing. I actually took my bow in to a shop and...

Fixed vs mechanical - one simple “new” question

I did the same thing and used Rage 2 blade. I did this because of how they flew (just like field points). But for me, over the years of using them, I ran into issues with deflection at weird angles or a shoulder hit a few years ago that didn't kill the deer and should have. My previous main...

    Bass fishing in pond advice!!!?!?!?

As for the trees on the dam, I would get rid of them. Roots will eventually cause you problems. As for the bass, we always killed it on bass from the time I was a kid until now (in farm ponds) using a rapala thin minnow. We usually went with the blue/white combo, but I'm sure most will work...

    Pickup hoist

I have one and use it. I think it is... https://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/guide-gear-deluxe-deer-hoist-and-gambrel-swivel-hitch-lift-system?a=681080 Now that I'm over 50, there is no way I'm getting a full size buck into my truck by myself without killing my back. I like this...

    Apple/Pear Trees

Where are you guys getting your arkasas black trees with the good root stock for Iowa? Would love to put in a couple of them.

    Apple/Pear Trees

That Bonide is what I have been using. Sprayed on Monday again as I saw some Japanese beetles on the leaves. Seems to work pretty well.

HF 2057, taking of nuisance animals

I agree Skip. I would think anyone experiencing damage like that which has a financial impact would probably give an officer more reason to give a permit. I don't have any "damage" but wanted to make a difference to turkeys, so it may not have held enough water to convince him. At least that...

HF 2057, taking of nuisance animals

My DNR officer told me that the bill didn't pass. I asked about getting a permit to take out coons for turkeys. He said no. Said nature will take its course (I assume diseases that kill them when the pop gets too high). He kind of said the same on yotes and that when you take some out, they...

    Hunters & Conservation….

Skip, I'm curious how your friend reacted to your comments. Were they open to agreement? I have found (not always) that when you have a face to face with someone you know and just talk, people tend to agree on a whole lot more that what the internet says. I will say that there are some...

    Apple/Pear Trees

Really appreciate the advice. Got twp in the ground today. Moved to a different spot that had good black timber type soil. Hoping those take off. May stick a couple pears in to see how those work. We love eating apples as much as they are for deer so I am all over them.
