Honest locust and broadleaves in switchgrass and miscathus

Should also be able to cut locust and apply tordon to the cut stump. I wouldn’t overspray however.

Favorite thing to plant in newly cleared plots in woods thats 1/2 acre

A fall planting Rye + clover, or some type of Dbltree mix is hard to beat. Agree with the above. Need soil test asap, likely low in lime and P, K. Sulfur is needed for clovers as well.

Planting Clover chic and chic/plantain/alfalfa/burnet mixes

Too late to get a good stand of perennial clover without a massive weed war on your hands. Establish in the fall with cereal rye and have the best stand of clover in your life the following spring!

    Looking for disc

Yes, definitely. Death of the small family owned 100 - 200 acre farm.. 6' Disc cost $3,500. 12' Disc cost $2,500. 6' Drill cost $5,000. 10' Drill cost $2,500. 6' is sweet spot for food plotter market.. We're in the process of trading in our 50 HP Compact Utility for a 75 HP Ag Frame...

    Looking for disc

Yes, that should be a 2,000 lb disc. Nice thing about hydraulic pull behind discs is you have much better depth control than a 3 point. Adding a railroad tie on tight or hard soil helps as well, as mentioned above, but you may not need it.

    Gobbling Rhyme or Reason

+1. Sunny mornings they tend to gobble like crazy, cloudy days - just here and there. Can pickup around mid day on cloudy days however. My experience..

Anyone know what plant this is?

May not have deer value, but I'd be hesitant to remove natives. Part of a balanced ecosystem.. Coralberry (Symphoricarpos orbiculatus) offers significant wildlife value, providing both food and shelter for various species, especially during winter months when other food sources may be...

    Pell lime

I want to say I paid about $30 - $35 / ton last winter applied. 50 lb bags of pell lime go for about $7 around "here".

    New respect for turkeys

    Blasphemy.

    Alfalfa mix?

Red clover is a popular companion. But can complicate spraying options if you intend to do so.

    Year around food

Never cared for the fenced in food plot approach. I understand for browse pressure, but depriving them when they need it never made sense to me. Feels a bit too manipulative.. Like a 75" tall woven fenceline. I want to hunt deer in the wild. Not on an obstacle course, or a playpen.

Cover Crop website - FIXING SOIL & SOIL LOSS

Skip - I think you’re spot on. Wider and scrubby fencerows where not only great erosion buffers, but flush with wildlife (quail, rabbits) as well! Herbicides are definitely much more effective, weedy crops were the norm “back in the day”. Pre Round Up, it was all row crop cultivation.

Cover Crop website - FIXING SOIL & SOIL LOSS

I enjoy the Ag PHD channel. This topic comes up often.

    Prepping for switchgrass

Personally, I’d wait until the soil temperature is warm enough for the switch to start growing quickly. Closer to late May I’d get a good kill. Then quickly after I’d disc, pack, seed and repack. From there you can use your pre (then) or post (later).

    Switchgrass

Update to my "disc, pack, seed, pack then walk away" dirty switchgrass edge. Real World (Alamo?) Switch. Planted June 1. No weed control or herbicides. A few CSG (fescue) patches remain. Came back and felled a few trees into it. Only maintenance is I mowed in April following the first...
