New respect for turkeys

So you are hunting fall turkey season and skipping deer??;)

Fall turkey season isn’t the same as spring turkey season. Honestly I’d be happy if they got rid of it. They honestly need to make it bearded turkey only in the fall. Not sure why they haven’t done it yet. I also don’t think the people that let me hunt their properties for turkeys in the spring would let me do it during deer season. haha

I got too many other birds to chase in the fall anyways. I barely have enough time to hunt everything the way it is. Geese, ducks, pheasants, and deer.

I’m with Curtis on this. I have no problem with fall turkey seasons, but if the population is in decline, why are we shooting hens in the fall?

“Turkey hunting >>>> deer hunting”
I hear this all the time & my standing offer to EVERYONE that says it has still never been met!!!!….. I will trade anyone their biggest buck or bucks for all the biggest best turkeys on my farm !!!! :) ;). I have still never had anyone take me up on this!!!!
My #2 for hunting, BELOW DEER!!!!!…. PHEASANTS!!!!!!!!

On main topic… agree… they are crafty…. I didn’t get into turkeys because the first couple years I didn’t see squat & got skunked. & then the farm work started piling on. Now the farm work is massive this time of year. But… the kids or buddies…. Great to see em go after the turkeys & the genuine enjoyment of it is awesome. We’ve been doing turkey nuggets & I figured out to fry em a lil lower heat and not as long…. Yum yum.
& literally as I write this…. Back to the farm work now!!!

We bought our farm in CRP, then transitioned to row crop when the contract expired. I tried farming using vacation and holidays from my day job. Left little time to hunt so opted to custom hire the farm work done. I found that the planting and harvest windows were not friendly to hunting for me. Felt guilty on stand when I "should have been" on a tractor. Was lucky that farming was not my main employment.

Agree 1000%. Most folks r way better off renting land out. If u dont love doing the stuff & dont go all in- rent it. Or able to handle losses, weather, huge repair costs & risk.
Only reason I do it is I can do as much or little as I want as each year changes so much. And…. I’m unemployed :(. Certain fields & projects I like done certain way but I’m being fussy. 99.99% of those reading this…. RENT your farms out!!!

I'd say turkey hunting is more enjoyable to me. The weather is more comfortable, dont have to worry about the wind/your scent, they handle hunting pressure better, you can come & go a lot easier. Throw up a blind to bowhunt out of in the middle of a field and they dont care. Hearing gobbles in the morning is awesome, and calling one in and hearing the gobble get closer & louder really gets my heart beat going. Its a real show if using decoys and having a tom come in at 10 yards and beat up your decoys and see them strut so close. Get tired after a few hours, lay on the ground and take a nap (ive been knows to climb down from my stand during deer season and take a power nap at the base of my tree too though). Run & gun and calling with turkeys is a lot of fun too. And, a tom is a tom. A two year old bird with an 8 inch beard and 3/4 inch spurs is just as good as an older bird with a 10 inch beard and 1 1/4 spur in my book and seems to be to anyone.

But, dont get me wrong, I'd rather have a mature book come into bow range any day.

Turkey hunting is super fun but not gonna touch deer for me. I had a turkey hunt a couple years ago end abruptly after I stumbled upon a nice shed.... getting in position for that fired up gobbler went out the window and a shed hunt began immediately (I did find the match!)

While walking through the woods, I find my mind wondering to topics like new stand locations. Watching deer work around some terrain feature or something while sitting over some turkey decoys and my mind fills with "what if I did ____ next year at that spot......". Moving way too much while trying to get a look through the binos at the nubs some buck has growing, etc. Easily distracted by the deer.

I always have said, only the smart turkeys come to the calls. The rest wander aimlessly. It's like hunting deer that have had a lobotomy. The smart ones are rare. :)

Love them both! Wouldn’t give either up but the spring is tough to beat with the world coming back to life, gobbles and laughs with my boy in the turkey blind!

I would call them 1a and 1b - Skip put me on an Osceola and you can come hunt any of my farms anytime!

Been turkey hunting since "93", tipped my first one over in "95". I'm sure at some point this spring I'll be out there scratching my head, asking myself WTF? Strange bird.

Turkey hunting is only better due to less lost sleep/stress and jealousy . I’ve screwed up on plenty of turkeys but never have been haunted by the big tom that got away. Lol. I’ll just kill the the next one and move on with life. They are all about the same when it comes down to it. Heck of a lot of fun and doesn’t keep me up at night. Deer on the other hand…. Would probably be way more productive in life if it wasn’t for them.. maybe.. I like to think the drive to keep deer hunting and acquiring more land keeps me motivated for work too!
