    Here we go again EHD????

It’s getting really bad last couple days. I found 4 on one farm in southern Warren county. Have noticed significantly more buzzards flying around, less deer on camera. Fixing to be a crappy fall if this weather doesn’t change and change fast. I know guys in Dallas county getting slammed too.

    Just for Fun Notes

I do it for waterfowl hunting. Started it about 10 years ago just to keep tract of trends with movements and weather for my own personal keeping. Wish I would have started it 10 years before that. Cool to look back on and connect dots. I would definitely suggest doing it.

    Here we go again EHD????

I think we as hunters are part of this equation by fear factoring one and other. Think about how many trail cameras each of you run today compared to 5 or even 10 years ago. Take that times the number of hunters in Iowa and that’s how many more trail cameras are being deployed. Throw in cell...

    Brassica yellowing

Yep that’s exactly what I’m seeing as well. Also side hills or very poor soil plots are showing just like this too. You going to throw some rye/oats down in to compensate? Or call it a year and it’ll be what it’ll be? I’m torn on wha to do. Felt like there’s enough food if the rain comes.

    Brassica yellowing

Agreed, southern Iowa needs to catch some rains at the end of this weeks. My plots are really showing some drought stress.

    Clover

Where at are you in the Midwest? My clover got mowed today, southern Iowa. Good soil, plenty of moisture where this plot is; plus good couple chances end of next week. Deer prefer those fresh, tender shoots over seeded out, older plants. Just my opinion, but I don’t think it’s too late to...

    Brassicas

But make sure you’re elaborating on the most important part of all this………..are you drilling your seed in or are you broadcasting on top, broadcasting on top and cultipacking……..all 3 of these will result in potentially different successes.

    Brassicas

My career (agronomist) I help improve farmers profitabity and I do that on over 40,000 acres across several states; since it’s a competition here. I’ll post some pictures October 1st what my plots look like. Like I said, bad advice is bad advice anyway you look at it. Planting in dry soils...

    Brassicas

Priorities I guess………. Plant now, with no rain will result in no growth, anyway you shake it. Relying on a pop up rain with today’s weather trends is just poor advice IMO. Birds will 100% hammer turnip/radish/rye/wheat seed.

    Brassicas

I would disagree with anyone saying to plant now. How do you expect things to germinate? Morning dew ain’t going to cut it. Rain is the only hope. If you don’t get it, you’re feeding the birds. There is plenty of time as long as your soil prep work is done. I planted turnips in south...

    How much fertilizer?

It appears your phosphorus in these samples are your limiting factor here on the fertility side. Your samples P1 & P2 show those results. VH-very high, VL very low, L-Low, etc. P1 shows what’s available to the crop, P2 shows what’s in the total soil profile that was sampled. I would assume...

Tell me why we should shoot more does

I think hunters have to take the bull by the horn here and use their own personal judgement. Each farm is different , but it blows my mind to see people talking as if Iowa’s deer herd is anywhere close to what it was 10 years ago. Outside a few “refuges” I would venture to say every county in...

    Consecutive brassica

Agreed, I’ve planted turnips on turnips on the turnips for 6-7-8 years in the same plots; have had zero issues with growth. Because Owen shoots big bucks that makes him an agronomist. Be curious to know why he says you can’t plant turnips multiple years and have success………

20 Years of Non Resident Hunting Iowa, My 5th Tag This Year, I'm Psyched!

I don’t think it necessarily discriminated based on dry or wet, but I do know that majority of the farm ponds in my area have water as well as the major creeks and streams. We are slowly slipping into the dry period, however it’s August in Iowa; that is to be expected. I have no idea what the...

20 Years of Non Resident Hunting Iowa, My 5th Tag This Year, I'm Psyched!

In the area you’re hunting, 2018-2019 EHD was devastating. We’ve been in a pretty severe drought for the last 2-3 years on top of this. This has been a pretty excellent year for growing deer as well as below normal heat. Overall I can’t remember a spring/summer combination like we’ve had in...

20 Years of Non Resident Hunting Iowa, My 5th Tag This Year, I'm Psyched!

You’ve picked a great year to come. The wet summer we’ve had should keep EHD away for the most part, as well as the deer making some fantastic jumps in the antler department. Great area your hunting and should be a some fun times.

    Brassicas

Agreed. We’ve got plenty of time. I planted Sept 15th last year and had turnips the size of baseballs throughout the entire 1.5acre plot. Our southern iowa sub soil moisture is slowly depleting as we’ve missed a ton of these pop up storms last 10 days. I’ve been burned so many times in the...

Warning to the dads of young girls...

You nailed it. I’ve got a 7 and 1 year old, both girls. Never saw myself growing up as much of a girl dad. Now, I wouldn’t change it for the world. Watched my 7 year old shoot her first Tom this spring and hopefully her first deer this fall. My youngest seems to love her dad time too, so I...

I would mow then spray a couple days after mowing event. IMO guys go wrong when they spray then mow, you’re just setting yourself up for another spray event if the chemical hasn’t completely killed the plant your mowing. Mowing will just regenerate the growth process.
