160 acres sounds daunting. I'm 3 years in messing with 23 acres of old pasture. It seems like I'm adding more to my to do list than I am crossing things off at this point. Good luck with your endeavor. It's a lot of work, but very rewarding.
I've never pickled them, but we used to smoke them. We treated them similar to salmon. We would filet them leaving the scales on, and would generally just season them with salt and pepper or lemon pepper. When they were done the meat would flake off the scales, and bones. It's been probably 20...
It's been a few years since I've been in my wildlife courses at college, but for some reason I remember a study referencing deer and needing more protein during certain time periods. In the study they were discovering deer eating bird eggs out of nests to get a quick fix.
Crazy, I just started looking into these. I have a 2008 Silverado with 150k on it, and it's using a quart to a 1.5 quarts every 5k miles. The range for a couple hundred $$ seems like a pretty safe investment.
Careful posting these pictures guys. They are the perfect example of what farm bureau fears in Iowa. Think of the thousands of bushels of corn and beans those fatties have eaten, and how much more damage they cause when a car smacks them ;).
Also can deer get diabetes? You might need to start...
I'm pretty sure I would shoot and would have a full body mount done. I hunt too close to home and would worry about the dog and kids. The decision would be a lot easier with a gun in hand vs a bow. Either way I would be tracking it with a gun in hand.
I'm left eye dominant, and shoot guns left handed with both eyes open. I shoot a bow right handed and have to remember to close my left eye. The only issue I've had was in H.S. and my 1st chance at what I considered a large buck at the time presented an opportunity. In the heat of the moment I...
We had a rough weekend, and my daughter learned the toughest part of deer hunting. We only got out Friday night, and ended up seeing about 20 deer. The last deer into the field was a mature buck that we've had on camera for the last 3 years. He came into 50 yards, and she took a shot. He trotted...
Between my work schedule, and my daughter's soccer schedule we didn't get out this weekend. Next weekend is wide open though, and we'll be out. Weather looks pretty good for next weekend, hopefully it holds.
I just checked cams today. Of the 6-7 different bucks that were on it all but 1 was shed out by 9-5. I'll check cams on a different property next week, but I don't think I'll see much of a difference.
I have thought about throwing a stand in this 1. All the lower branches look like this from being browsed on, and there are usually 2-3 scrapes under it every year.
I run 6 on my 25 acres, and 3-4 on 120 acres of public. I have them out from mid July to late January, and they are mostly on scrapes, rub trees, and low fence crossings.
Anyone have thoughts on mulberry trees?
I was always under the impression that people considered these undesirable, and made it a point to remove them. They are growing on me, and I've been leaving them on my place if they aren't bothering anything. They put out a ton of fruit that the deer...
