    Rye...now??

Deer are in it already. No turks close enough, not likely to be any in this area.

    Views from the stand 2024-25

Using the decoy tonight. Have seen 4 baldies and a little forky. The forky was just feeding along and behaving himself. But he must have got a dose of "November" because he ended up chasing one of the does and clearing the field. Plenty of time yet for the right one to show up yet.

    Rye...now??

I have not sold it, but I plan to. I am planning on bringing it back to my shop this winter and replacing some wear parts on it, so as to restore it back to "like new" condition.

    Rye...now??

Looking awesome!! I drilled this in with my still relatively new PH Outdoors drill and it performed perfectly. I am really looking forward to upping my planting game this coming year via using it!!

    #1 target is down

The buck is hanging in the neighbor's barn, all is well. Pics tomorrow AM. We have sheds and pics going back several years on this joker. Trail cams showed him more active in daylight this year than in previous years...a trend that we have seen before. Where a 7+ year old seems to get bolder...

    #1 target is down

My son Mark, on his 30th birthday today, took out our #1 target with 3 minutes of shooting light to spare. Recovery is underway, I will post more pics once we have them. This is a 7.5 old survivor and one of our smarter bucks through the years. He has been a pretty regular homebody over the...

    Hunting Rain

My son hunted in the on again, off again light rain the other morning and saw at least 5 different bucks, one nice one, and watched two young bucks really go at it in a buck fight. He was in a blind, in a field that has had a lot of deer activity lately.

    Hunting Rain

The calendar says...GO hunting!! :) Hunting in the rain can be tedious, but still productive. My problem is these SE winds are KILLING me. Then, wouldn't you know it, we have 90% SE winds Fri-Mon. Dang it!!

Outfitter in iowa hiring lobbyist so we sell out our resource….

FWIW, I know of an outfitter that lost their biggest client about 8-10 years ago following an EHD outbreak that greatly reduced the number of "shooters" that fall.

    Views from the stand 2024-25

Sneaky...I like it. Back in the day I had a couple of killer stands that were at least that close to a road. East in, easy out and the deer naturally linger for a few extra moments before making a break for it and jogging across the road. I also think they were distracted by the...

    Rye...now??

I did get all of my rye in before yesterdays rain. 4 bags drilled in, 1 bag broadcast on more sloped ground. I'll post some pics when it pops...my sense is that I will see something in 3-4 days.

    Rye...now??

Broadcast one more bag of rye this AM and will use up the last of my 5 bags that I had via the drill after work. For the first time in quite a while, rain chances look pretty good starting later tonight. I am curious to see what it looks like in a week, provided the rain comes in tonight.

    Garden observation- Swiss Chard

Cool observation. I don't know a thing about it at this time, but if it is more frost hardy than other plants AND the deer like it, I will plant it. :) Now then...how long will it take some social media dweeb to start touting swiss chard AND telling us that they have been using it for years...

    Rye...now??

FWIW, I drilled in 3 bags of the rye this afternoon...hopefully I get some rain on it. I kept 2 bags to seed via bag seeder on slopes that ol' Daver doesn't want to risk with the tractor/drill. :) I'll try to time that just before, or even during, a rain.

Low movement of bucks? And apple trees

It just hit me...I think a wide area of Southern Iowa got some rain this morning...something that basically hasn't happened much, or at all, in the past several weeks. I suspect that even though it is still relatively warm today that bucks will be eager to open up scrapes if there is finally...
