    Story and Polk County Punks

Unfortunately guys like that are why I quit shotgun hunting because they were running over everything, permission or not and landowners start taking the stance of not allowing anyone on their land. Al is right, a$$-chewings don't phase people like that, they get them on a regular basis. But now...

    Right or Wrong

It's a matter of how lease is written. My dad is retired and leased his land, but retained hunting rights in the lease. I would approach the landowner though and as mentioned before get it in writing with his signature.

    The deer keep smelling me!!!!

You cannot totally eliminate human odor, but you can do a lot to minimize what will put a deer on notice. I agree that sometimes the commercial cover scents get a little strong. I continue to use coon urine and am happy with the results. I also like the HS dryer sheets and I will store my...

What now? Is the rut over?

Going in to my stand Sunday caught a big 12 with a mature doe at the the end of a brushy point about 75 yards away. I circled and saw that they had bedded down together. The jig was up at about 50 yard, no shot, but as I watched them run away, he was obviously tending her as he headed her off...

    new to archery--help

Custers is still around and very good. Also might try Siouxland Sports in KD Station, they're pretty straight shooters and hooked up with So. Archery in Spencer. Just some thoughts. Shoot the bow you feel comfortable and confident with and practice; $$ won't buy success.

What is your maximum bow shot?

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm glad to hear that everyone understands their own abilities. For me 30 yards is my max shot. As far as close shots, it had to be the buck I rattled in and he started raking a limb on the tree I was in. Good Luck.

    Manure effect

I don't consider myself full of sh!# if that's what your asking, but this is a regular occurence on some of the places I hunt. All the activity, especially if they're working at night, would be the only thing to cause the deer to cool off in my opinion. Who needs coon or fox urine, you just got...

    Done for the season

Why not a doe picture? People who are taking does are doing at least as much to control the population and balance the buck:doe ratio. From what I've seen of the corn/bean fields the farmers are going to raise he!! if this continues...need to keep the does in check.

    Reasons for wearing your harness...

I did the back-flip out of (luckily) my lowest stand/14ft during second weekend of early muzzleloader season. I made the mistake of grabbing for a dead branch on my way down, that's why I usually make an effort to cut or break those branches off, guess I didn't with that one. Luckily I bounced...

    JUST SICK!

Sounds like you unfortunately took an ill-advised shot, something I'm sure a lot of us have done at one time or another and regretted. Eight inches isn't very deep from that angle and I think he'll heal up fairly quickly. I don't agree that he'll completely leave the area. We hit a shotgun buck...

What is your maximum bow shot?

Just wondered what everyones maximum bow shot distance would be. Mine is relatively short, not because I can't shoot a target at 50 yards, but I'm not comfortable with my shot at that distance on a deer. Always interesting to find out what others set as their personal limit. Thanks.

    Big Bucks on scrape/rub lines?

Very few of the older bucks, but if the number of forkies/young bucks is any indication, we're in for a wild ride in the next several years. I'm not seeing nearly the amount of scrape and rub activity as in the past in "traditional" areas. While there will be some gone after this weekend, we...

    Party hunting

It's the old "united we stand, divided we fall" thing again and hunters are too small a minority to be divided and succeed. There are a lot of groups that would like to see us divided, let's not let them win...

Not To Be Political Or Anything But.....

It could be a case of the lesser of two evils, but the incumbent has obviously shown thru the dove issue that he has a serious disregard for his constituents. This is only the tip of the iceberg; we'll continue to see this in every program from roads to education. The polls are where we make a...

    Party hunting

I used to party hunt 2nd season shotgun, but do not because of all the above...and also a lot of deer with "grill" marks and I don't mean the charcoal type... Then 2 years ago I found a half-buried salt block 20 yards out from what I know is a bow stand. Hmm, wonder how this salt deposit formed...

    The Can......

These bleat-in-heat or can calls have been around for awhile. I'm pretty upset with myself when I don't have mine in the stand. Early season if you don't turn it all the way over it imitates a fawn bleat and later it can really turn bucks when they're looking for a good time.

    Excitement tonight!!

Have you ever used the bleat-in-heat type calls? Little cans that you just flip over and they imitate a doe bleat. I've turned deer numerous times with them. It actually works better when they're walking away, because they can't make you. Good luck.

    What to do??????

I agree with Iowa1. That time of day, this early in the season, that buck does most of his travelling early AM/late PM. Sounds like you caught him bedded. Judge what you feel is the closest you can get to him on a travel route to or from water/food or set up on two different routes to play...
