Ruined my KS season before it started!

Hoping to do as much as I can! I’m roughly 5 hours from the closest unit that I can hunt, so it will be a challenge. I’ve never hunted in western KS before, so I have lots of learning to do. I do have my in-laws scouting in the meantime!

Ruined my KS season before it started!

That's what I'm working on trying to find out. Looking like no at the moment. My current tag is either species/either sex. So I could kill a whitetail, but only during that 10-12 day rifle season and only in western KS. Bow season started yesterday. I called KDWP, and they said that I...

Ruined my KS season before it started!

Just here to complain. Haha. This is my first year hunting as a KS resident, so I should have done more research. I live in eastern KS, and planned to hunt whitetails here the entire archery season. But, my in-laws have some land with muleys (rare) in western KS, so I put in to get drawn for a...

What would you do with this deer?

Thanks all! Lots to think about here. I’ll definitely give updates as the season goes on. This is in Missouri, so if he survives rifle and looks healthy I’ll likely give him the pass. He could be 5.5, but we prefer them to either be 5 or 6 rather than 4 or 5.

What would you do with this deer?

My goal on my farm is to pass bucks until they are at least 5 years old. I filmed this deer in 2021 from the stand and thought he was 2.5. However, he broke his leg that fall. He’s been getting along fairly well since then. This year he’ll be 4.5, maybe 5.5 max. He still seems to be putting on...

I was feeling the same way!

Cementum Aging - Am I Wrong?

Circling back to this thread. So I actually picked up my deer and results from my taxidermist a few weeks ago, and it turns out he had me confused with someone else….. Here are the actual aging results

Roundup Ready Corn & Soybean Food Plot

Trying to get caught up on this thread, so sorry if it's been answered: For those who are doing no-till corn, when are are you applying your fertilizer? Is that usually done at planting?

    Farm Activity Tracking App

That would be awesome! Feel free to shoot me a message. For folks using spreadsheets, how do you track progress of food plots and such? Especially when images get involved.

    Farm Activity Tracking App

Hey all, Was wondering if anyone had an app they use to track all the things that happen on their farm. Thinks like: rainfall, food plot planting dates, fertilizing, deer sightings, etc. If not, what features would you like to see on it? I’m a software engineer and am considering building...

Cementum Aging - Am I Wrong?

Thanks for the encouragement all! Matson lab is actually going to test the backup tooth that was sent in for me. I’ll be sure to post back in here when I get them. But, regardless of the results I’m still super proud of him, and confident he’s at LEAST 4.5. Probably older And here’s some more...

Cementum Aging - Am I Wrong?

Yeah, some of the angles in the pic make him look pretty different. Fairly certain all pics are the same deer because of the split G2s with the distinctly black tail.

Cementum Aging - Am I Wrong?

Hey all, Just wanted to get some of ya'll experience with cementum aging. My taxidermist sent off my buck's tooth to Matson's Lab last fall. Just got the results back: 3.5. Pretty bummed. My goal is 5.5+ which I thought this deer easily fulfilled. Am I wrong here? I'm in west central MO. 2020...

    No-Till/No-Herbicide: Is it possible?

Thanks for this response! What does your yearly disking and planting rotation look like without herbicides? How would you get starting on mine this spring if I go that route? I have a tractor and disk.

Here’s my soil tests for my plots if that helps at all.

    No-Till/No-Herbicide: Is it possible?

Thanks for all of this! It sounds like herbicide might be necessary here. Just thought I’d hear everyone opinion since herbicide or tilling hasn’t directly been applied to this soil in decades and the organic matter was almost 7% in some areas compared to 2-3% in our pasture a couple hundred...

    No-Till/No-Herbicide: Is it possible?

Yeah, I’ve watched a lot of those videos! I’ve just been wondering how to actually get started without the initial use of herbicide or tilling. Especially in some of the areas the fire didn’t get. Do you think rye would be better than something like oats or buckwheat this time of year?

    No-Till/No-Herbicide: Is it possible?

Hey all, I bought a farm last November. Some of the areas I want to plot haven’t been touched in 30+ years, so I’ve been going back and forth on if I never till or never use herbicides. Is it possible to do neither with much success?? If you had to choose between no-till and no herbicides...

    Thoughts on my new farm?

Would ya'll plant that entire open patch? And if so, would you leave the cedars?

    Thoughts on my new farm?

Oh no! How would you recommend getting rid of it? I was considering doing RR beans in some of this area. Would that be a good approach?
