    Killing Locust:

Black locust is an introduced specie in Iowa. It has small, opposite thorns and small pods. The pods aren't utilized much by wildlife. The tree is a legume and therefore does have nitrogen fixing bacteria in its root nodules and it does help stop erosion but it is one of my least favorite...

    Shagbark Hickory

Squirrels of course love hickory. Only twice in my life have I seen deer ear hickory nuts. Both times it was fawns. It sounded like they were busting their teeth. Hickory are not a favored browse for deer. Also, they grow well from seedlings in a closed canopy. Oak do not do well in a...

    Birdsfoot Trefoil

I've observed the same thing. It is great for erosion control but I've never seen deer feed on it. From my point of view it is a weed in my prairie re-establishment and legume plots. I have read that there are other varieties of birds food that are prefered by deer but I don't know anything...

    Weed spray for legumes?

Thanks for all the feedback. I have used Post Plus and at other times Select to control grasses in legumes with good results. It is the broadleaf weeds I'm dealing with now. Has anyone used Slay on legumes other than Imperial Clover?

GOT MY FIRST BUCK OF THE YEAR!

I just got my first deer of the year and it is a buck! Made a solid hit and he went down right away. I usually shoot most of my deer with a bow so the loud bang and all the smoke were unusual and surprising. Really stunk too, just like when you shoot a muzzleloader. Sometimes when I shoot a...
