Well... No telling if it's going to work or not, but here's where it's at. I sprayed last week, and it seemed like it worked pretty well. Everything was yellowing pretty good before I started tearing it up. I was unable to get a disc, so I ran a cutivator over it a bunch to break it up as much...
Paul,
Here's a few pics from our plots. Coming along great! I was really surprised to see how much clover was tucked in under the rye. It's a bit spotty in places, but I'm sure I'll be able to fill it in. This field was bulldozed from scrub cedar just about a year ago. To say I'm pleasantly...
Is discing rye under, enough to "kill" it, or is it better to spray if I'm planning to plant something else. I was going to plant some sunflowers in a few weeks. Should I spray the rye to make sure I get a good kill, or will discing it be enough?
Thanks
Steve
I was going to try a few rows of corn out in one of our lower plots. Really more just to try it, than for hunting over. I know that the deer will hit it hard, but I'm planning on putting it in the fenced (electric) area that I have one of my plots in.
So my questions are...
When should I...
WOW! The winter rye has come back strong!!!! There's also lots of baby clover mixed in with this stuff. Really cool and I'm thrilled with how well it came back. First thing up for sure!
And good for these too...
My plan was to spray this week, disc it up a few weeks later and plant second week of may. I have a "drill" of sorts... (one of those push seeders), but the seeds will not be broadcast. In essence they will be drilled. Then I'll hit it with a pre-emergent.
At least that was the plan.
I've already got the posts set, and I'm going to try and fence it off with electric fence. We'll see how that works. Any thoughts on the question of tilling under or spraying?
Steve
I have a small field that I planted to the winter rye / clover mix last season. I don't think I used enough seed, so it came in, but really thin. (Pic below). I want to plant sunflowers (for doves) in this field in another month. My question is... since it's so thin, what do I need to do. Should...
Would there be any reason / benefit to throwing down some fertilizer? I fertilized as per soil tests last summer, but haven't done anything since.
If so, what should I put down and how much per acre?
Steve
Update.
Went out to the plot today. Pleasantly surprised at how quickly it's starting to green up. Lots of little clover popping up all over the place. Winter rye is really springing back to life quickly as well. Thanks Dbltree!
What needs to be done to apple trees this time of year? We planted 15 trees from Stark's last year, and they seem to be doing OK (although I'm anxiously awaiting the first sign of green buds on them after the summer / winter that we had). Am I supposed to spray them with a dormant oil spray...
I'm looking to plant some food for the doves this year, and hopefully bag a few birds on my own property. I've got about an acre and a half area that I'm going to plant. I have 10# of Peredovic Sunflowers and 10# of Proso Dove Millet. Originally I was going to try and get a drill, but I might...
I'm in central Missouri. Big rains today, then the temp is going to start dropping with day time highs in the mid 30's and lows below freezing. Looks like it might stay that way for a while. I was planning on frost seeding this weekend. After the rain, but right as the temp starts dropping a...
Got it. Thanks. I do have brassicas, and my plan was to wait until mid-April and disc them up, then go with the berseem and oats combo in the area where the brassicas were. That will be the area that I then rotate to Rye / Clover come this fall.
The area that I currently have in rye / clover...
