    Apple/Pear Trees

Kazak apples I haven't read through all of this thread but I skimmed it for references to Kazak apples and didn't see any. I read about Kazak apples in M. Pollan's book ' The Botany of Desire'. Well worth reading. It describes how apples are our most genetically limited crop and require huge...

    Field peas

I was surprised to see some fields here tonight with peas in them. I have never seen them before. The farms here are diary farms so I assume them are for cattle feed. I don't know how they use them, whether as silage or what. The fields are near a busy highway. They are knee high and I saw no...

Let's see the Best Tree on your Property

The big spruce on the hillside is neat. It is about 3 ft through and who knows how high but it stands well about the mature hardwood around it. There is a twist in the base which may be why it was spared by logging to reach this size.

    Your Hunting Land Description????

Woods Fairly typical scenery here Woods,Woods,Woods I hunt big woods in SE Canada. Very little agriculture although there are some isolated farms near here with soybeans, alfalfa, and corn. Mostly 100's of square miles of woods with very few people 5 miles outside of town. Lots...

    Best Binoculars- FOGGING UP Question???

There are many coatings now that help with this like Bushnelll rainguard. I have heard it works well although I have not tested any. I wear glasses and there is nothing worse than fogging to irritate me. Also, some of the coming tech is described here

    Soybean usage

More interesting comments. I checked a day old picked corn field the other day and I couldn't see much that would interest deer. A few crows were in it but there wasn't any corn laying around that I could see. This farmer seems to have a harvester that takes the kernels off the cob. Other guys...

    Opinions on rubs needed.

I checked a rub cluster Sunday and saw some fresh rubs. This is a traditional rub site, one of the few I have found after lots of scouting. Deer populations here are low, less than 7 per sq mile so rubs are not common. Two years ago, I saw a buck on these rubs that had 26+ beams and 12-14 back...

    Soybean usage

An interesting range of responses. I guess the consensus is : Standing beans good. Picked beans not so good. picked corn good. alfalfa good. Does the alfalfa have to be green? It will be frost killed and brown here soon. A farmer told me it doesn't do so well here as we are on the freeze...

    Soybean usage

It is strange with all the reading I have done that I have no clear idea of Soybean usage by deer after they drop their leaves. I was in a picked bean field yesterday and there were lots of waste beans. In the past, I haven't noticed much fall usage of beans around here but that doesn't mean...

    How slim are the chances

I would not be surprised that is because the fabric has ultraviolet dyes on it. Most stuff is made to sell not work. Anything out of China and what isn't is likely to have UV dye in the fabric.

    sugar beet usage?

Interesting post dbltree. I pm'ed you a reply I got from someone promoting them. The idea here is to use them for ethanol production. It doesn't seem economic with their requirements but I am no farmer. If they are cheap enough it may be interesting to see if they can supplement deer in...

    sugar beet usage?

How do deer forage on sugar beets? Local farmers are planting them now and I have not seen deer on them. The web says deer love the foliage and root. How do they get at the root in winter? Would the beets not be inaccessible in frozen ground? Do they have to be tilled up for them to get...

"A lot of times when setting on an edge, such as those along an open field, the wind will actually "Barrel Roll" over the tree tops and push your scent the opposite direction.. A light breeze will drift it out.. " I came to this site on a search for such info. Does any one know where to find...
