1st Season. 1st Day. 1st Shot. 1st Turkey.

The start of this story really begins last night as I gathered up my gear for this afternoon. Somehow a handful of mishaps and blunders turned into an opening day success for this turkey hunting green horn. It started when I realized at 9 p.m. last night that I didn't have any broadheads- or couldn't find them. As I tore apart my house I realized that my roommate had some new ones he never used. I didn't even know if they were the right weight or not. So I attached one and flung it at the target under the yard light and it hit the spot every time- good enough. Then I realized I didn't have a tripod for my video camera- or couldn't find it. So after work today I called my uncle and he lended me his. I got into the blind about 5 o'clock as I watched a big tom 150 yards out struttin his stuff. Not wanting to spook him I belly crawled 6 yards from my blind to set the decoys and then crawled back in to get the camera set up and do an intro when the low-battery light came on and the camera died... perfect... I'm an idiot. So I said screw it and began calling. No answer for a good half an hour so I took the mouth call out and was getting ready to pull out the pocket yahtzee and/or throw in a looper when a HUGE boss tom came racing in a snortin' and a fussin'. This big boy covered 40 yards in 10 seconds and I drew on him. He had me shaking like a leaf in a tree- I'm embarrassed to say but almost more than when that big ol' mossy horn walked passed me this past fall. He wouldn't stop for a good shot and what do ya know I don't have my mouth call in. He came within 4 freakin' yards of me and kept on a goin to the right and out of my line of sight. So I sat and listened blindly as he spit and drummed at the jake decoy breeding the hen decoy. He meandered about 40 yards out into a bean field so I put in the mouth call and started some soft yelps and worked up to a pretty aggressive sequence. He would answer me back but did not want to come back in. I then watched him wander back down into the woods so I made that mouth call sing but he would have none of it. Just then to my left a jake erupted with a gobble ten yards away. I peeked out and he was coming in to my other hen decoy lookin' for love in all the wrong places. As he came broadside I sent one thru the boiler room at 6 yards and it was a done deal. My first turkey ever and with a bow to boot. Now I gotta wait til May to draw back on another one...

Field measurements weren't worth taking but the memory will last a lifetime.

Congrats, hopefully my luck will be as good as yours tmrw, as I am not too prepaired either. I take it a "Looper" is a Copenhagen?

Nice job Seth! Just FYI I think you can get another archery only tag and begin hunting immediately? Something in the rules changed... I think.

Nice work Seth.

muddy is right you could always have two archery tags and kill your birds throughout the season. They changed the one bird per day rule. It is now one bird per tag. So, archery hunters as well as shotgunners that have two 4th season tags can whack two in a day if the birds are willing...

I'm not much of a mouth caller, so I have a skeez(looper/cope) most of the time. For some reason I don't like having something that vibrates in my mouth. Weird. Great Bird though, hopefully I'll be joining the "Strutter by Bow" status myself this year.

Great job, now you have to find something to keep you busy until May. Let us know what works, because I have a hard time with that myself.
