2005 Rut Late?

The full moon this year is Nov 15, given that info do you guys think the Rut will be late this year? I can hunt Iowa Nov 17-22 or 19-25 not much different but which would you prefer. With a late moon this year do you think the bucks will be locked down with does at this time or will it be a great chance to bag a slob. Thanks for all the info.

Yes the rut will be late. It always starts after the second full moon after the autumn equinox. I would shoot for the 19-25 timeframe. Hope that helps!

The rut will be the same time as it always is, It's not gonna come late, its not gonna come early. I don't think a buck with a hard on is gonna care if the moon is right or not

The only thing that would make the rut late is if the does were malnourished and failed to come into heat the first cycle. That is almost an impossibility in Iowa.

Give me til the end of november and I can tell you just how well late it was. Here in the midwest, the moon plays little effect compared to food availability, weather conditions, Buck to doe ratio, etc etc.

It sure is a good hypothesis to go by but in the last 5-6years as I have followed the moon and rut timing and found nothing to ring 100 percent true. As a rule, does start coming into heat as early as mid/late october and the last one can get bred as late as Jan/feb. Peak rut here from what I have seen is about the 14th of November (when I see the chasing stop and the bucks lock down with a new doe every day or two.)

I was really torn between the last couple of days of Oct but with all the hype on a late rut and scared that the weather would be warm I have bought my plane ticket for 17-22. I hope its not to late. I am going to Ill the 7-11 so that kind of hurt my plans in Iowa. Thanks guys for all of the reply's and keep them coming. Good Luck to all!

You cannot go wrong hunting Iowa anytime in November. Leave the science books at home and look for a good adventure and you will find it.

I plan my two weeks vacation each year with Veterans day as a peak point. In 32 years I have never been dissapointed.

Be safe and have fun.

The 2nd and 3rd week of November will be "primetime" if you want my opinion. First week will be good as well, but my vacation is from the 7th to the 22nd. If I get "sick" it'll stretch forward to the 3rd.

I agree with Liv. You will have deer moving regardless of the moon phase during November. I am sure that there will be bucks locked down with does the first week of November and there will be bucks locked down with does during the time frame you plan to hunt. There will be just as many looking for love...hopefully near my treestand.

NCbowhunter where are you going to hunt in IL, just asking because I hunt there also. From about Nov.5-Thanksgiving you can't go wrong in either state, you will see some hogs in both. Good luck

I'm with LIV! The rut will be the same this year as it has in the past. I'm taking my vacation from Nov 1 - Nov 7. I like to try and get them before they are locked down with does.

What town will you be close to?, I work in Hancock county...Anywhere from laHarpe to Carthage, to west Point is seemingly the best based on the LaMoine River bottoms and the thick drainages it uses as tributaries.

Bingo Liv!

Your biggest variable is going to be weather/temps. Even with that said, if it was 100 degrees all of November in Iowa you can bet there will still be fawns come next spring in Iowa

I will be hunting @ Warsaw, IL.

I sitting right now about 10 minutes from Warsaw and Shredder could be there in 5!

South of warsaw, you get into river bottoms again and big bluffs. Good area as well. About 10 minutes from adams county and 60 minutes from Pike county. While you are there, you will have to give me a call. Hunting with a friend, outfitter or leased ground?

Blaster,

For that reason right there is exactly the main reason why we elected to come down Oct 29th through Nov 6th to hunt. If the temps are going to be on our side, the biggins should be running around scent checking like crazy. Get them before they lock down. Fingers crossed of course!!
