2015 Iowa Turkey #2

Wasn't able to get it on film. On my way home from my Uncle's burial I saw one of my buddies and begged him to go turkey hunting with me at 1pm. He told me he didn't want to go because it was too hot. On my way home I saw 2 toms and a hen and knew where I could setup. I called my friend and he never answered. I went home grabbed my gear and flew out the door and walked a mile to where I had setup in the AM. I didn't even hear a gobble this morning, on my way there I scared two hens and thought those were the ones with the toms but looked over the hill and there they were strutting. When they went behind the hill I setup my new Dave Smith Decoys. I had been having trouble getting anything to come in, that's why I purchased them. Anyway, I called and they looked over the hill and here came three of them running. I was trying to get the camera ready and before I knew it they were at 10ft gobbling. I drew back and my peep broke! I knew I could shoot 10ft away and hit the biggest of the 3 and he ran off and the other two stood around (Told my buddy he should have been with me) I waited and watched the other two spook and run away. I stood up, and started walking to where I last saw the tom and I couldn't find him. I looked until 5:30, no luck! Then I headed home to get ready for a graduation party I was invited to. Dad asked "Can I look with your cousin?" I said "Sure, here's where I shot him. Good luck finding him." No more than 5 minutes he called me "Found him, under the tree you last saw him" I checked that tree about 20 times and he wasn't there! Anyway, he picked him up and brought him home for me :) Ol' man had more faith than me!

Congrats again. You sure have a healthy population of bigguns over there. Nice bird.

View attachment 2966 This is his score :) 71.75 if anyone is even thinking about getting DSD just do it! I have the breeder pair, as you can see. I don't like using it now because the toms can't see it until they get up close because the grass it tall. I wish I would have just bought them before season! Would have made it a lot easier :)
