2016 Colorado Buck

Packed up all my gear and got off work at 10pm on Tuesday and headed down to Colorado to hunt with my buddies. Now my cousins and Uncle couldn't make it out to hunt this year because he had to go launch a satellite in California. (Check it out here:
)

I was successful in 2014 with this tag and saw larger animals but really wanted to hold out for something that forked this year after being unsuccessful in the draw for 2015. Shot one that was a little bit better :)

Wednesday morning we all woke up and stepped out of the wall tent expecting cold temps...not to be bit by bugs! It was so warm I could wear a long sleeve t-shirt and be comfortable. I threw my jacket on and we headed out. We went to a hill side and started glassing and found a group of 23 mule deer. I saw one was a decent looking buck with trash and it was obvious he split.

I made a mistake and pushed the buck a buck too hard and someone else wrapped their tag around a gnarly buck. However, I learned and got back on my feet and headed out of there. Once back to the truck we started driving down the mountain and we glassed a couple ridges and someone pulls up next to us. He said he shot a buck and needed some help dragging it out. I volunteered. It was only a half mile or so off the road and we just grabbed him by the antlers after gutting him and headed down the mountain. It took a little while and once we got back to camp we skinned, quartered, and caped the buck (ironically the guy was in our same camp). We had lunch and were just chatting away and my buddy pulls up and says "Let's Go!"

We started back up the mountain, saw lots of deer but nothing either one of us wanted to shoot. While coming down the mountain my buddy had just finished saying "Now with the sun to our backs we'll be able to see a lot more deer." I said "There's a decent buck, you should pull over for that one." he pulled over and the deer was 100 yards off the road. We got out and put the glass on him, I'm sure my buddy didn't see him. I grabbed the gun and then my buddy said "Oh! That's the one you want to shoot?! Shoot him!" I ran off the road a little over 50 yards to find a spot to lay down and shoot and he was right at 100 yards once I spooked him up the mountain a little ways. I settled, got down and made the shot. Perfect double lung! BUT I didn't know it was a perfect shot until I racked another round and was ready to shoot again and saw blood pouring out of his side. I decided I really wanted him dead and shot again. He then fell head over heels and hit his antlers on the rocks and started running right at me! This deer ran and fell 20 yards from where I was standing! From there we put him on the truck and headed out.

It was a blast and I'm still being a pack mule for my other two buddies :)

Here's the buck I helped get out, you can see the road in the background.
