2025 Bow Season

Copying what I posted on my social media as I always enjoy when others post their successes so sharing mine:

Every fall I enjoy so many things about hunting. The chase. The anticipation of what may or may not happen throughout the year. The effort it takes to find an animal that I want to target. The conversations with family & friends where we obsess over every detail of our plan.

This fall my favorite part was the quiet. Losing my Grandma Jean has been such an incredible mix of emotions. She truly lived a life worth celebrating. 95% of the days have been filled with joy as I know she’s experiencing the other side of heaven. The other 5% seemed like it always hit 20’ in the air. Those quiet hours were where I got to say “I’ll see you later” to someone who was there for EVERY major event in my life but also every minor event in my life. She gave us 100% out entire lives.

I spent the entire day in the tree stand on November 3rd. Sunrise to sunset. That day I read the book ‘90 Minutes in Heaven’. It might be one of my favorite hunts of all time & I never picked up my bow.

Being able to harvest the only two deer I wanted to target was such a blessing and it feels like Grandma was such a big part of each chase.

My #2 target I was able to harvest on October 29th. I hunted him twice & had encounters each time. The second hunt he fully committed to my decoy & gave me an 18 yard frontal shot. Naturally he gave us a run for our money. 8/10ths of a mile later we finally got him recovered. When he showed up this fall I was obsessed with his body & neck size more than his rack. As a result I actually hunted him before ever chasing my #1 target. He scored 160-3/8”.

My #1 target was a deer I had nicknamed the ‘Windsor Buck’. He showed up on our farm just days before Grandma Jean passed. We’ve been blessed to own our farm for 7 years. During that time I’ve never had a deer I wanted to target. It’s hard for me to wrap my mind around the irony of him showing up just days before her passing and as a result he became my sole focus after filling my statewide bow tag. I had three encounters with him prior to harvesting him on the 7th. It was such a fun chase & it’s definitely bittersweet to have it over. He’d broken a G4 and a G5. We believe they were nearly the exact same length as the other side, if so, he would have scored 176-3/4”. Making him my best bow buck to date.

As I write this I’m 20’ up in the tree with no ability to harvest a buck until gun season. Im just enjoying the ‘quiet’. So many people think hunting is all about the ‘trophy’. For a majority of hunters it’s far more about the journey than the destination!! God Bless!!

Holy cow(s)!!! U weigh either of those bucks btw? Body on first is giant. Congrats on a dream season!!! Lot of hard work pay off there!!

Wow, great season. Curious on that frontal shot. What did you hit? Elevated? What type of head? I took a frontal this year that turned out great, but in hindsight the realization that it could have went sideways pretty easily is still on my mind.

Elevated. It was a decoy hunt & he had crushed my DSD buck decoy and was standing next to it trying to figure out what had just happened. I was worried that time was fleeting and felt comfortable taking the shot. I shoot 150 grain Iron Will broadheads & a Hoyt RX-7 with 80 lb. limbs turned all the way up. I wasn't at all concerned about my equipment being an issue but him being so close I didn't do a great job accounting for the angle and my entry was 3" lower than what I wish it was. Basically cut a bunch of arteries around the heart but didn't directly hit the heart. 8/10ths of a mile and we must have said a thousand times that he had no blood left, I have no idea how he could have made it so far because the blood was insane. He ended up bedding 3 times in the road ditch off a paved highway & we found him in the 4th bed in a mowed waterway.
