2025 Opening Day Archery Spring Turkey

No pictures, yet. ;) Though should have taken some yesterday.

It was opening morning, had two days off work. I could hear the wind howl but it's opening day, Man! Can't skip it.

Terrible night sleep Sunday night into Monday morning. Finally just gave up and got up at 4 am. You'd think I'm a kid or something, who gets that excited for turkey season? Guess if it didn't get me cranking, I'd quit. I had loaded the truck Sunday evening, so after coffee and breakfast and I hit the road to the timber.

Still quite dark when I got there, carried the DB blind, the folding chair, the bag of decoys, a sack of food and my bow across the field to the timber's edge. I popped open the DB blind and set it on the edge of the timber, grabbed the decoy bag to set them out. As I'm deploying the dekes, I hear something and turn to watch the DB roll into the timber. Ok, so that's how it's going to be.....

Finish with the dekes, get the blind back in position, then set two legs of folding chair on the bottom flap of the side of the blind the wind is hitting. Figured that will hold it in place. But what if I have to move to get drawn and make a shot? The blind would probably blow off, messing up the shot and freaking out the turkey. Not much to do but hope the wind dies a bit.

At daybreak, I hear Toms gobbling from the roost in about every direction around me, though none sound close. Don't matter, figure I'm here for the day and they will make the rounds. At 10 am, I catch movement and see a double bearded Tom at 25 yards. He looks at the dekes and hardly breaks stride, continues on past. No chance at a bow shot, with the shotgun he'd have been rolled. Wasn't 5 minutes later and two jakes poke their heads over the hill. They eye the dekes and nope out of there.

I hoped the wind would die and the blind would heat up in the sun, but neither was happening. Broke down the set at noon figuring there is plenty of season left. When I got home, I did pack some "tent stakes" in my kit to take next time.

With the wind howling again today, decided to save a day of vacation for later in the season, headed to work. I could have gone down into the valley of the timber to set up along the creek, but didn't want to wade through multi flora rose and the brush is thick, which limits the visibility of the dekes. There will be other days... Hopefully I'll be adding more to this as season progresses.
