Just got this in an email from a friend. It is a real shame that things like this have to happen. Please be careful out there during second season and keep this family in your thoughts.

What a terrible accident. Everyone think safety first. From beginning of archery season all the way to the end of the year. My sympathies to that family.
 
I was hunting just across the road when the accident happened. Talked to a close friend of the families and he was where he wasn't supposed to be. The father had no idea he was there. He went over to look for any signs of a hit after the deer had passed through and that's when he walked up on his son but it was already too late. I didn't even feel like hunting the rest of the day. The most important lesson for everyone out there, get where you're supposed to be and stay there no matter what! There's still a lot of gun hunting left so everyone good luck and be careful.
 
I heard that on the radio on the way out to hunt this am...there were also an injury or two reported as well.
 
That is horrible. I cannot imagine dealing with something like that. Makes me a bit more glad that stuff like that is virtually unheard of up here, only b/c of far few hunters. My thoughts go out to all involved. All of you shotgunners be safe and think of what is waiting for you at home.
 
Man that gives you that sick and terrible feeling inside ya. I feel for the family and friends of this man. I hope everyone can make it through this one.
 
that accident could have possibly been avoided, if two-way radios were allowed. they would make it alot easier to keep tabs on all the people in a group, especially since they were hunting foreign territory to them
 
I'd have to agree with you Teeroy.....I think they should be allowed, and I don't even shotgun hunt with a group. I think that many more lives could be saved if two way radios were used.....but that's just my opinion. What are the downsides to them?
 
What a terrible tragedy. I too agree with you Teeroy. Two years ago I was stopped by a conservation officer who tried to take my radios. I used the radio one time that day to let my dad know that the shots fired were mine and all was ok. The officer told me he had the conversation on tape and he was confiscating my radios. I told him to play the tape and he refused. They could not be used to coordinate the movements of game or other hunters but whats wrong with letting your hunting party know all is well? I ended up keeping the radios. They cost me about $75 each but a human life is priceless, I for one will use them as needed. JMTC
 
I couldn't imagine what the family is going through. My thoughts and prayers go out to them. Beyond a sick feeling went through me while reading that story. I'm not going to get real long winded and go on about unscoped shotguns and deer drives (even though neither make sense to me).

Please everyone be careful and use your head out there. Always be sure of what your shooting at and whats behind it. Life is short enough without having it taken away early than meant to be. It could happen to any of us, hunting does have a dangerous side that few people really think about.

Is this a fairly common thing? A terrible accident like this? I for one am against 2 way radios but my circumstances are entirely different, if they would possibly save lives in situations like this maybe the law should be revisited. Nevertheless.....a terrible tragedy.

from the DNR's perspective, people using them to transmit the location of deer, like "big buck going east!" "some one get to the east road!"
that situation is going to get people all headed to the same spot, in a hurry. potential for a auto accident, shooting from vehicle/road, etc.

i don't see where using them to let everyone know that the posters are set, and the walkers can start, or that the walkers are through the section, and need to be picked up, or that we should go hunt the "farmer smith's" farm next, is a big danger
 
Man, that is really too bad. He had a great family that loved him... It's alos just another reason why
non-hunters don't like hunting.

In regards to the two way radio thing. They are a great tool for safety. I have heard of many people who now use their cell phones to help in keeping track of each other. This is a game law that doesn't make any sense. The main reason is that it takes into account the well being of the "fair chase" above and beyond the safety of the involved hunters. Of course we know how flexible the DNR is when it comes to dealing with gray areas and their rules. Unless you work for Realtree or Drury Productions you probably wouldn't be cut any slack. On another quick note, everyone (especially group hunters)should take advantage of aerial photos of where they hunt! They are free and you can make copies for everyone in your group. This has helped our deer hunting safety tremendously..
 
Very sad.

Guys the bottom line is RESPONSIBILITY...be 100% sure of your target and it's surroundings. If your not than your gun should not be fired. I believe it's that simple.
