Active Duty Military License/Tags?

AIRASSAULT

PMA Member
Hey all. I'm going home on leave from Egypt on November 25 through December 9. My plan is to be able to hunt first shot-gun season. I looked up on the IowaDNR site and all I could find is this:

"Military personnel on active duty with the armed forces of the United States, on authorized leave from a duty station located outside of this state, and a legal resident of this state, may hunt or fish without a license.

You must carry your leave papers and a copy of a current earnings statement showing a tax deduction for Iowa income taxes while hunting or fishing."

I guess I don't have to buy the actual hunting license, but does anyone know if I still have to buy my deer tags? People over here keep telling me that all I have to do is call the local DNR officer and he will come out and put a tag on a deer for me. I can't find any info on whether that is true or not. Is there a limit to the number of anterless tags I can get this way if all I have to do is call the DNR officer?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Back about 20 years or so ago All I needed was my leave papers, and when you kill your deer, you left it an contacted them. They would then show up and tag your animal for you. It looks like they have a few more requirements now, but from my research it is basically the same. I know the one thing that saved me from getting in hot water once was to call them ahead a time and make sure. Your local COs numbers are listed on the DNR site.

Sounds like a great November for you AA. Glad this is in place for you. Kill a slob!

I checked this out last year on the outside chance I got home. You need your DA31 showing you are on leave to Iowa, when you drop a deer call the CO and they come and tag it. You get one tag only, a anysex tag. If I remember right your from the Muscatine area, Muscatine county CO is Tom Campbell 563-260-1223. He is a nice guy and pro-millitary. Last year he told me "don't worry, you get home and I'll make sure you get to go deer hunting". You should give him a call with a heads up that you are here and what your plans are. If you are from Louisa the CO is Larry Desser 563-260-1225. My guess is he is a lot like Tom. If you want, send me a PM with when and where and I'll contact them for you.
Glad to hear you get to come home and even better that it's during hunting season /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Tom Campbell is the guy Billy, he is good stuff and will hook you up!

look forward to you sittin behind a chunk!

Thanks for the info.. Yea, Tom is a good guy. I've met up with him on several occasions. He even gave me a ride back to my vehicle after I got all sorts of turned around in the woods and was walking down the shoulder of a road while turkey hunting and came out like a mile from where I parked.
This reminds me of one of my first bowhunting experiences ever. The first year I bowhunted when I was 12, my dad and I were hunting in Wiese Slough (only saw one deer the dozen times I went out there) and when we were walking back to the truck one evening, we were just about to the passenger side door and Tom jumped out of the darkness from the side of the truck and yelled "Conservation Officer!!". Scared the living S*** out of us! I guess there were some duck hunters that were shooting past shooting hours that he was trying to bust. It's funny when we look back on it.
Anyways... thanks again for the input. I suppose I'll use that then for my anysex tag and then I will try to buy a couple of antlerless tags also. I can't wait!!
