Update
So- found arrow and actually had the stud 20' yards away- he's obviously fine and I missed clean- mystery solved. *Deer had started coming out at dark and I wanted them to pass by - he ended up coming by - way too dark to shoot so I just watched with binocs til they all passed by and snuck out.
