I have a NR tag for zone SW #4 (Archery) but not hunted it before. We have hunted zone #5 before (Centerville area) Looking for any advise on what public lands would be worth checking out? We have a connection in Dallas county who's recomended areas on the Middle Racoon river. I'd live to hear from anyone in the area or who's hunted it or anyone who has other recomendations in SW Iowa.
We're not outfitters or professional hunters, just a couple guys looking to do it yourself.

Try your local sporting good store They normaly can order you a Iowa gazzetter that will show you all the state land.

hit a wal-mart when you get here, and pick up a sportsmans atlas

Yeah, the gazateer is nice, but I vote sportsmans atlas as well.

Thanks everyone, I have an Iowa Sportsman Atlas and have also checked out the maps on the Iowa DNR site.
Was hoping to gain insite on what areas might be better than others for archery hunting.

I would get out here and find a big buck then work on getting permission to hunt that deer. Thats the only way to consistenly put yourself on big deer. Some public has got big bucks, but alot of it doesnt. I wouldnt hunt a spot unless I got a real good reason to be there.

Scott, I understand! But, comming from Mich, what I consider a "big" buck is likely an average buck to you all in Iowa. What is "BIG" to you is probibly HUGE to us! We will be quite happy to see 120" buck.
