Afternoon hunting dilemma

Let me start by saying I'm new to hunting (which may be obvious from the ?). I'm pumped to hunt as much as I can this season but don't get off from work till 3-4pm. By the time I make it to my stand it'd be close to 5pm. I'm concerned that getting there that late (esp with bad wind direction) I'm doomed to get/see nothing. Is it worth it to go or should I only go on days I can get there earlier?

Hunt any chance you get regardless of the amount of time you can spend in the tree.

Stand approach, wind direction, and stand location will all need to be considered and every situation is unique.

I can't tell you how many times I've gotten into my stand after 5:00 just to have deer walk under me 20 min. later. As stated above go often, you won't know unless you're in the stand.

The more you hunt the better your chances will be!
There are a lot of times I get in the woods late myself, anytime I get out I am happy.

I agree with Ghost...watch the wind!

The best advice that I can offer is to put the time in now. Try to hang as many stands as possible to account for various winds. Cut trails where possible to your stand sites to reduce noise as you approach your stand. Time spent now will increase your odds later. Any time that you can spend in the stand is time well spent. By being prepared it may give you the opportunity to pull off a 20 minute hunt.

Dewy...you are genius. Hang multiple stands, cut the trails, play the wind, and put the time in. Work all week and get paid on Friday. I love it.

Pretty ballsy for your first post. Might even be your last.

The more times I hear/read advice the more times it is reinforced the more a part of my habit it becomes. A newbie, and I still consider myself a newbie, needs every bit of advice they can get.

I'm wondering how much travel time is involved in getting to the stand?
I make certain I have several stands within 5 or 10 minutes of my house. (i live in town) Stands with easy access routes. I get off at 4pm. A quick shower and in the stand just before 5 many times. You may hunt the last hour of light for weeks and never see a deer. But killing one in your easychair is far more unlikely. Of any time to hunt I'll take the last 15 minutes of light.
Being out there can pay off huge! Perhaps you will spot the monster at last light and get the edge you need.
Seasons short - hunt hard.

well i cant say much im still in school. but i get into m stand about 5 sometime later because of school. but i go there no matter what time it is i spend alot of my weekends before season preoping my trail to and from the stand and diffrent ways to aproack thema ll i have 6 stands for just me all because of wind.. im late sometimes in the morings on weekends because of school games and that crap ill walk in late like right as light is comeing and ill make alot of noise rushing. but i always end up seeing deer even if im late just because im there. i can shoot them from my bed or infront of the boob tube. but good luck and welcome to the sight

I agree with everyone else as much time as possible. Last year I had 30 minutes before a Fire Department meeting. Wouldn't you know it, the doe was hanging and I was only 5 minutes late.
