Alfalfa clover mix

Whats a favorite type of clover and alfalfa to create mix for perennial plot?

Whats the seeding rate of each?

Can you plant with success in spring or should you do that in fall?

I’d separate em to be honest. Like- do half the area in clovers alone & half in alfalfa alone.
I’ve done a mix but doesn’t do as well … drop alfalfa to maybe 5 lbs. run 5 red, 3-4 alice white. Could add some crimson, berseem, balansa, etc.

Thanks Skip. Would you plant still this spring or wait until fall? I don't have a drill. Disk and broadcast is method of planting

Go by what Skip says, but I think now is a perfect time to plant it. I’d cultipack it too, or rent a drill if you can.

NOW!!!! I’d probably add oats.
Can seed it anyway that works for you. Just don’t get it too deep & make sure to get all fertility right. I’ll put “ideal” below but doesn’t mean there isn’t a million ways & tools to use to get it done…



IDEAL IF YOU DOING ALFALFA: kill, disc (yes, I said it ) …. Cultipack. Seed. Cultipack. This is more for alfalfa as it’s far fussier than clover to get established. A Brillion or a harrow, etc can all be substituted. I seed it with a drill but broadcast is fine. Alfalfa is just more finicky so make sure PH is right. Followed by p&k. Finally, make sure boron, zinc & even sulfur are right. Likely it could be: p&k: 70-70. S: 15. Z & B: 1-2 lbs.

Yes, u can drill all this. If it’s a blend of some alfalfa with clover … I probably would drill. Shallow. If you are just broadcasting…. Like anything - get good kill. Do anything possible to scratch & pack seed to get against soil. Lots of ways to do this.

I've had great luck with frigid forage mix..1st year is mainly annuals, second and third year really does good.

I spray, burn, disk or till depending on plot and maybe pack if got time. Try to broadcast before a rain and let nature pack for me
