Ames Urban Bowhunt is back on!!

The Ames city council re-instated the urban bowhunt last night. There has been a couple changes to the rules to eliminate several controversial park areas and to modify the hunting times. The hunt will resume on Nov 1. The main thing is that the city did not bow to pressure to use thousands of taxpayer dollars to unfounded means of controlling the deer populated but instead used the most sound cost effective practice, bowhunting.

to Ames for not backing down

Good work, bowandarrow! I confess I'm surprised in light of that silly full page ad in the Ames Trib last night.

Danno,

I'd missed the ad so went back and checked it out. Silly isn't the adjective I'd have chosen. What a load of ... propaganda! Pictures of children and old ladies with their dogs and all terrified to go to the park.

Then there's the suggestions of deer underpasses, immuno-contraception, keeping an "alert" dog.

And saying that the DNR wildlife biologists don't know what they're doing in counting and managing the herd.

Actually, maybe silly isn't such a bad description. At least the Council was able to see through the BS and reinstate the ordinance. But I would imagine the issue isn't dead yet.

Thanks Travis for your work on this. I plan to practice up and take part next year.

Thanks for the info and thanks for the hard work on this thing. My brother lives in Ames and may participate now. Glad to see the Ames city counsel still has some common sense, for now.

Thanks guys. I has been a real eye opener. The anti's really shot themselves in the foot so to speak with their misinformation, lies and antics. I had to bite my tongue quite a few times last night. The things I enjoyed most is when council members spoke about the research they have been doing on the subject of bowhunting and how it is safe, cost effective and a proven way to control the deer population and how these 'other' options were ineffective and very costly. I agree this will not be the last we hear of it.
