Ames Urban bowhunt proposal

Ames is proposing a possible urban bowhunt in several areas within the city. There will be a roundtable discussion with the city council to discuss problems and solutions with urban deer. If the city council decides that bowhunting is feasible then and ordinance will be written similar to what W DSM has. There are about 3 areas that have been studied by the DNR and others that have a heavy deer population. The meeting is June 20 at 7pm at Ames city hall in the council chambers. I just thought I would let others know so this has a fighting chance of going through. I have spoke to others who have already written it off as a loss.

The person I have been talking to did not say much about the areas except Inis Grove slipped out.

Thanks for the heads up. Hadn't heard that this was being considered. I have seen deer many times at Inis Grove, often does bedded along the hillside near where Duff curves to the west. I've even seen 'em crossing Duff to browse in the yards on the west side north of 24th St.
I see by the council agenda that tonight's session is listed as a "workshop" and the first of two items is "Round-Table Discussion on White-Tail Deer Management."

Anyone planning to go? I might have to run down to City Hall.

I might try to go but I have a meeting in Des Moines and I don't know if I'll make it back. Hopefully someone goes and gives us a report. The timing might be right for this. I'm hearing the locals complain about damage in their back yards. If we promise not to let any new malls under our treestands it's a shoe in.

Here is an update. The meeting actually went very well. The Ames city council will be drafting an ordinance for possibly having the hunt this year. Now we will start hearing from the other side of the coin (antis). We will have to keep up the pressure for this to go through.
