AMS Help

I've heard people swear by AMS, some don't use it. My question for those who are- what exactly do you use and what does your mixture look like in relation to gly/roundup?

My project- I have 5 acres of native grass planting. It's been burned at the end of March and I'm getting ready to hit it with gly and 24D this week. Any recommendations? I'll get at least one spray, maybe two, before planting with a no-till drill.

Great thread. Hope I’m not hijacking the OP by asking a follow up question…

How does “AMS Supreme” compare to “Class Act NG” (price & performance) for those of you who are familiar or have used both? At first blush, it looks like there may be more AMS per gallon in AMS Supreme.

I’ve used flake AMS for years and generally, have had zero issues. HOWEVER, I had MASSIVE issues using Enlist herbicide with flake AMS.

I have not tried Enlist yet using Class Act NG, but in my extensive online research and asking some sharp farmers, they say my problem was caused by the flake AMS even though it was completely dissolved in a 5 gallon bucket prior and always the 1st step in mixing order.

Interesting, never heard this. I have been using granular AMS + enlist duo + residual + 80/20 surfactant for 4 years now and get a great kill on everything from water hemp to pigweed and grasses. My close farmer friend runs the same across his 500 acres with great success, and is who helped me get setup. I just eye ball the granular AMS into the tank while the agitator is on full blast and let is mix up for a good minute or so before adding the chemical. Just well water. Do the same for just gly or gly/24D without the residual, just depends what I'm spraying. Had no problems but interested here.

Why would the flake make a difference? Isn't it all the same compound?

Here’s what I kept getting. First tank went thru fine. Second tank kept doing this non stop. Every time I’d clean the screens, turn the pump back on, I had instant clogs at the screens.

When I have time, I’ll post some articles I found that explain.

Been using flake AMS for many years, but 1st time using enlist.

The radio station I listen to ran an ad lately where they warn of problems using hard well water for spraying herbicides. Short 30 sec ad so it doesn't go too deep into it. That wouldn't explain one tank being fine and the second a train wreck though. Don't think farmers have many options on where they get the quantity of water needed. Length of time of AMS being in solution prior to adding Enlist??

AMS takes 10 minutes+ to fully dissolve. You MUST have most of your water in there, say 60-70% full before mixing. Another way is to dilute in bucket so it dissolves & then add. I have heard issues with ams & enlist.
If you guys want alternative that’s “almost as good” (IMO) - look at this. 1-2 QTs per 100 gallons of water. Has citric acid which breaks down the waxy coat on a plant as well. Which is huge. If a guy wanted to go hotter…. Probably mix in MSO (methylated seed oil) as well … it does have some oil in it so not sure how much hotter MSO would make it. But this is worth trying.
& yes - most regions with their water (even rural) will want to be using something like ams, etc.
