Any Trappers On Here?

Those are both nice male fishers. You are allowed two a year.

I mostly trapped coon and mink in Iowa, although I caught some of everything. WHen I moved to minnesota I had a goal of trapping a fisher and an otter. Haven't caught the otter yet.

I used to run about 500 traps a year. The good ole college days. I always trapped MO, so trapping season usually opened the wednesday before Thanksgiving. I would always be out skinning while everyone else would be having Thanksgiving Diner.

Iowa1, I usually averaged 10 otters a year. They are one of the smartest critters that I have ever dealt with on the trap line.

Those fishers would be fun to trap. I saw a few while bear hunting a few years ago. Funny little critters to watch.

I usually run about 3 dozen 220s for coon but this year ran 5 traps for 2 days. Just way too much stuff going on in the fall...ducks, geese, roosters, bowhunting, a 11 month old, job, family, national guard drill, etc. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif Life does just get too busy at times and this year my trapping efforts suffered. Like Nanny did...my roommate and I ran a huge line in college...averaged about 100 coons in 2 weeks my junior/senior year. That was the life. Our landlord loved us. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

This winter though I am going to give it a go at trapping beavers through the ice. I recently got access to 2 different ponds where the beavers are wrecking havoc and causing all kinds of problems so I thought in January this might help pass the time until shed season. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Beavers have to be one of my favorite things to trap....love the anticipation of walking up on a 68 pounder such as this one from last fall...how this thing got himelf in a 220 that was on a coon run I'll never know.

Big beav!

We are swimming in them around here. It's a lot of work to get them through the ice but you can get a couple hundred if you are willing to bust your hump.

i'd read that too. china's fur supply was used up, they held nothing back, and would be anxious to buy.

i have to think that the global economy heading in the tank is the main effect.

That's kind of what I've gathered from reading about trapping them through the ice but it seems once you get it figured out it is the easiest way to consistently get them and nearly whipe out the colonies. These ponds have easy access, so hopefully there won't be a ton of snow to wade through and I can ride my wheeler right up to them. If I don't get them through the ice I'm going full throttle at them in the spring. If I can get rid of them I will gain sole access to a totally secluded chunk of 90 acres that has not been deer hunted in over a decade. That's the driving force here. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Groenwold still buys?? That guy was ancient when I sold to him back in high school!

I trap a little here and there. More snaring the last couple years. Usually only set a 8-12 snares a year.

This year, Im going to try to nail some bobcats. I have a buddy that wants one for a full body mount. Might as well make full use and try to get my fishers as well.

I use to do alot of trapping but just don't have the time right now. I was just thinking the other day, hopefully someday my son will show interest in it. Then I'll MAKE time and get everything back out.

Not sure if he's the guy buying but they still go to him. He's got a few different guys buying for him I think.
