Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

I may check a few local ponds Sunday after Church but I haven't been seeing too many in the area. Got some local geese that are gonna be in trouble the next weekend though /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

Will be taking my son on his first youth deer hunt Saturday, but will join the usual gang in the duck slough on Sunday morning. Always a blast, and a great way to break in the shooting eye for pheasant season.

Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

Willie, I know its a little bit of a drive for you, but if you want to shoot some ducks, there are a few around Creston. Since they drained Greenvalley, the public ground south of it is where all of the waterfowl have been. There aren't tons of ducks, but plenty to have a good shoot.

Lots of geese around right now though.

Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

We will be out this weekend for sure but I am a little worried about if the ducks will be out this weekend though. I have talked with a couple biologists and conservation officers this week and I guess that bit of cooler weather we had last week moved a lot of the teal that usually stack up here this time of year. I haven't seen any ducks on the ponds up by my place this year so I don't know how it will go. I can only hope that the remaining ducks will get moving around to all the other ponds once the season opens. If not, there might be some serious driving involved.

Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

i had a flock of ducks all lined up, but they left. geese are easy to find, ducks...not so much. my group is going out sunday, so i'm on my own saturday, think i might try to jump some ponds, and walk the river a bit

Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

I agree with your info Shadowpeople. It doesn't take too much cold temps to push bluewings on south. Top that off with all of the standing water in fields, ditches, who knows where else, and I think it will be s l o w Saturday morning. That being said, I still will be sweating it out all weekend in the blind!

Good luck to all!

Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

met up with some guys at a small lake. just about the time i figured that there was going to be NOTHING moving, a small flock of teal dropped in, then, about 20-30 minutes later, a group of shovlers, then at about 7:30 we had some gadwalls working the dekes, but with ZERO wind, we couldn't get them to drop in. i think we had 9 ducks, teal and shovelers, with one juvie woodie we jumped off a pond

not great, but alot better than i expected

Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

with all the shooting by the Cedar here in Muscatine you'd think WWIII started. 6:30 on the nose, I'll bet in the first 1/2 hr I heard 60-80 shoots fired.

Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

Worst opener I have witnessed. Hope youth season is better than this.

Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

What I seen today wouldn't condone adding an extra woodie to the limit....fewest I've seen in 20 some years of duck hunting.

Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

We had our worst opening day ever also. We've always in the past either limited out or at least got our limit of wood ducks. Today 5 of us went out and we saw ZERO teal and shot 5 wood ducks. It was still fun though!

Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

same at the big marsh near parkersburg they didnt start filling it till way too late and the duck count which is usually around the 5,000-6,000 mark for opener was 300 this year it was tough everywhere is what I hear.

Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

extremely slow, we killed 3 teal and 1 hen woodie....

duh, we need a good cold snap!

Re: anybody shooting ducks this weekend?

We still have 26 days to go out here before the opener.

Went instead to a brush-up day to pick up trash and build blinds at our local refuge.
