Apple tree question?

I was visiting my neighbor's fruit tree orchard and he showed me damage from some kind of BARK BORER. I looked it up on a fruit pest sight and it said was common for pitted trees like peach trees, but my neighbor had them on his apple trees. It is caused by some kind of insect similar to a wasp, that lays it's eggs on the trunks, usually close to the ground. The larvae burrow in and eat under the bark, eventually leaving a big scar. He digs them out, but I suggested he just wrap the trunks with something to prevent the insect from landing on the bark. Anyone hear of this? I grew fruit trees up north where I used to live and this type of bug was not seen. I have a few young apple trees I'd like to protect. Thanks!

I haven't heard of them but we planned on planting a few apple trees this year, we will have to put something on them so that doesn't happen, thanks for the heads up!
