Apple Trees

Thinking about planting apple trees on the outskirt of my food plot and also along a ridge that is in between two ten acre stands of young pines. Any recommendations for what type/species of apple tree to plant?

apples

I am not an apple tree expert, but I do have apple trees on my farms. I go for simplicity. The common wild apple tree is $2 per seedling plug at the University of Idaho nursery. Grows fast, produces lots of medium sized apples and is cold tolerant. I received a box of with these in last year maybe 25 I think, they all survived and U of I also have some nice hybrid oaks:way:

Otherwise try Dolgo Crabapple (lincoln oakes nursery). If you want an edible apple, try honeycrisp.

Make sure you cage the tree. I cage them and put plastic under them.

Yep- I'll second the suggestion you click on that link! It'll give you everything you need to know including of the great varieties like Arkansas black, Querina, granny smith, pink lady, Kieffer pear, fuji, disease resistant varieties, etc, etc, etc.

Haven't checked the link, dbltree probably covered it but make sure you have a pollinator. Some apple varieties will not self pollinate.

Most of the major suppliers of apple and pear trees list the necessary or suggested pollinators on there web sites. Adams County Nursery is an excellent source of information regardless of where you order from.

Links in the Apple thread...;)

I grew alot of apple trees in N. Mi. I have tried to grow apple trees in SE Iowa. I have found it more difficult in S Iowa. I know the far south does not grow good apples. Did not think S Iowa was that far south. I have a feeling Iowa , with it's long humid summers, not so liked by apples. Along with the disease problems, from Cedar trees, and wet scab. I have disease resistant varieties too. I had some trees die from too wet conditions. I have clay. Had clay in Mi too, but never had a full grown tree die,,as in Iowa. Am tending more to hardy crab apple trees and looking into the Red Fern guy, as he grows trees in Iowa to start with. I say for sure,,stay away from bigger trees found in pots at places like MenaRDS and Lowes. Too large, usually die..
