awesome day of bluegill

I have permission on a farm pond in southern Iowa and it never really gets fished unless I go. It is completely overrun with bluegill- how its not stunted I do not know- but most of them are nice big- larger than my hand bluegill

so last week I took 2 buddies down there to ice fish with one goal- take a TON of bluegills out while there was good ice. we leterally caught over 300 in less than 3 hours of being on the ice. couldnt use two poles and they were hitting on bare hooks at times right out of the hole. We ended up keeping 180ish and each took home 60+ fish fry is in order- few days later I went to another pond with the same issue and filled a bucket in an hour or so with crappie and bluegill

Figured I would share since not much is going on elsewhere

Thank god for no limits on private waters- this pond needs this done many times more- but i believe ice fishing there is done

This pond is a blast- lots of 2-5LB bass as well. in the summer we put a canoe in the water and fish it with ice fishing poles- hell of a fight with these huge bluegills in the summer.

I used an electric filet knife- took me roughly an hour to do the 60+ bluegill I took home. Definitely the way to go

and yes muddy- sweet place for kids- you cant take them off the hook fast enough for them
 
As someone that hopes to build a nice fishing pond this coming summer...what secrets can you share about what can be done in the construction phase to lead to such good fishing? I have been reading about pond management over the past year or so, but I by no means am an expert on it.

Depth, water clarity, structure, etc...what is it about this pond that makes it so great? TIA.

I could go on and on about this. I think this pond is the PERFECT pond to support both large bass and good panfish population. It is a decent size pond- not really wide- maybe 50 yards or so but it is very long with multiple coves. I think this pond works so well because 1/2 of the pond is about 3-5 ft deep and full of trees and brush piles (we cut 6 ft tall brush piles out and planted them in the shallow side of the pond Also put a few nice size rock piles on the ice next to the brush a few years back). This gives the panfish a great area to take cover. The other half of the pond gets to around 14 - 15 ft deep for winter areas. So it has cover in the warm months and deep water in the winter. It also ONLY has the two species. No catfish The pond we put catfish in has never been good for bass or panfish. So I would try and have a pond in two phases- 1/2 full of brush and not too deep and the other half pretty deep and lots of area.
