Bedbugs (or bed bugs) are small nocturnal insects of the family Cimicidae that live by hematophagy, that is by feeding on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded hosts.

Attracted by warmth and the presence of carbon dioxide, the bug pierces the skin of its host with two hollow tubes. With one tube it injects its saliva, which contains anticoagulants and anesthetics, while with the other it withdraws the blood of its host. After feeding for about five minutes, the bug returns to its hiding place. The bites cannot usually be felt until some minutes or hours later, as a dermatological reaction to the injected agents. Although bedbugs can live for a year or as much as 18 months without feeding, they typically seek blood every five to ten days.

I spend 12-15 nights a month in Hotels. TRUST me, it's worth the extra $$$. It may cost me an extra $100.00 or so a week but it's worth it.

One guy I work with makes the maid service come to his room and strip his bed and put all new sheets and a comforter on while he stands there and inspects the matress. He was eaten up by bed bugs...ONCE!

Not to scare anyone....but bedbugs have been making a HUGE comeback in the US in the last 5 or 6 years. You can run into them anywhere there is a huge turnover of people from various parts of the country and world. Tops on the lists are hotels and college towns. The scary thing is, is that they are really hard to kill. Many researchers are thinking that the absence of DDT is leading to the explosive trend of bedbug cases. And here is the kicker....cleanliness has nothing to do with weather or not bedbugs are present. I personally know a friend who has a brother that runs a high end hotel. Guess what? They have bedbugs and can't get rid of them. Bedbugs only have to hitch a ride in someone's luggage or dorm furniture and then set up shop. They live in cracks in your headboard, edges of carpet, shelving units, closets.....the list goes on and on.

Think twice when you say to a buddy, "sure, if you don't have a home for your old college couch...I'll take it!"
