I used to keep track on a calendar each year of how many my dad, uncle, a family friend and I used to shoot. If memory serves me correctly, 1983, we shot a total of 327. The following year it began to drop considerably, 256. The next year, my senior year, we were down to 118. Some of this was due to changes in life and not being able to hunt as much and much of it was the beginning of the decline in bird numbers.
We never did top the 100 mark again but we always managed to shoot quite a few, along with some good quail huntin too.
Sadly, my 2 boys only got to experience their very young years in the 90's watching me and their grandpa have some really good fun hunting pheasants with my german shorthair. The population here in Shelby Co has gotten so bad I havent hunted them in 2 years and I havent even seen a covey of quail in this area for 2 years as well.
