i got a camelbak commander a couple months ago and its awsome but for the short hunts what do you guys use? im a big fan of camelbak products and they have smaller ones but i dont want to be one sided so any imput would be nice
I had the same issue this summer...trying to find a small pack for 1/2 day hunts. I never did find anything that I'm real happy with.
I actually ended up getting a little pack at Wal-Mart that is about 10"x8" or with a single strap on it. It's got 1 main pocket and a zippered side pocket and holds my knife, Gerber folding saw, license/tags, spare peep tube, and some Hot Hands for late in the year.
Just getting those items out of my pockets has been great. Total cost was about $7.
Badlands 2200. One of the best packs on the market, IMHO, and the company's warranty is truly great! I ripped a hole in part of the pack last year (my own fault) and they fixed it quick - no questions asked and no charge.
I don't see it on their web site yet, but I got my latest issue of Field and Stream last night and they had a comparison test of several back packs, including the Camelback, Badlands, Cabela's, and a couple of others. You might want to check it out.
Not to sound like a skipping record, but here's another vote for the Badlands packs. I had a Cabelas bowhunter XL pack and though it was nice the thing didn't ride as comfortably as the Badlands. Also picked up a stink that wouldn't go away. Took it back and used the credit towards a 2200. Recently my personal backpack took a crap and I replaced it with a Badlands Hypervent pack, now that I figured out how to remove the internal metal fram I am very happy with it. Badlands packs are spendy, but I know I won't ever need to replace them on my own dime.
75% of the time I have my Summit climber on my back so I had to come up with a solution. What has worked best so far has been the Primos bowhunting vest and a Cabela's fanny pack. I can get everything I need into the woods without having to carry a backpack at all.
Another vote for the BAdlands 2200 here. Had the same problem as Muddy with my Cabelas pack smelling like a dead skunk. With Limb and Muddys suggestion I sent it back to Cabelas and bought the Badlands!!!!
