basement project

BDAHMS

Be here Now
Had a fun project I was working on over the last week and a half or so- figured id share-

I recently built a house in the Des Moines area and I always said when I moved into my first home- I would have a barn wood style basement- but instead of getting actual barn wood- I purchased a couple types of wood- multiple stains and decided to make it up as I went. I think it turned out awesome! Once I get stuff hung up and I get my muskie replica back in sept I will update it- but it should turn out pretty great! the two light pine squares I am getting a couple pieces of steel with designs laser cut out that will go over them. Just the parts of steel that are cut out will show the light wood.

I started out by painting my walls brown so if there was a gap in the wood none of of the white would show through

Then came getting all the raw wood- I had to cut it all to different lengths to get the random look and also true up 4 sides so it fit flush

this was just about 1/2 of the wood

Then came staining it 5 different stains- a couple of them more than 1 coat to give another color

We then started hanging it- no rhyme or reason- just wanting it to look "random" main thing was to make sure it was level on the top layer- which was tuff since the ceiling wasnt exactly level

Once it was all up- we touched up what needed to be and then framed out the door and corners or the wall and recessed pine squares. Once it was touched up I sealed it with a flat finish

finished product

I will be switching out all the white wall fixtures to either metal or brown so they dont stand out as much- but I think it turned out exactly like i wanted

Sorry for the long post- figured a few of you would enjoy this!

I really like that. Great work. I'm tempted to show my wife but I'm afraid she might like it and then my project list will just get longer.

That looks slick! I've been collecting "decent" pallet boards to do a cheap guy rustic wall in my basement. Now you got me thinking a different route!

I was originally looking at Barn wood or Pallets as well- but decided to go this route. The trim and two lighter squares is Knotty Pine and the majority of the wall is Alder

I've got an entire basement left to finish including half of it which is to be my man cave. It's on the five year plan. Haha. I'm really liking the look you've got there!

Your room looks great, nice concept...be sure to post pics when you are all finished too. Keep up the nice work!!

FYI...regarding pallet wood...I too have done various things with pallet wood over the years, but I guess I have also read enough warnings about using used pallets that I have gotten away from it nowadays. If the pallets have been used, there may have been a toxic chemical on them, etc, and then once you start working with them you may be exposing yourself to hazardous dust, etc.

Just a thought to keep in mind. ^ I still will use what are obviously "clean" pallets from time to time, but not ones that I cannot tell "where they have been". ;)

Dang man thats awesome! I have been wanting to do this for awhile and I think you just gave me the motivation needed.

The trim and 2 squares are knotty pine and the rest of the wall is Alder - It has Dark Walnut, Red Mahogany, Early American and Espresso stains. It is much more vibrant in person than the pictures show- it turned out better than I anticipated

I'm in the process of this exact same project. Where did you get the Alder boards and what stains did you use?

I purchased the alder from liberty hardwoods in southern ankeny just north east of woodland hills golf course. I can't remember brand of stain- I'll check when I get home. But I used dark walnut. Early American. Espresso. And red mahogany On the red Mahogany and walnut I put 2 coats on half of the boards I stained that color to add another contrast to the mix. Ebony is also in there which has a dark charcoal color
