Before the echo podcast

I had about an hour road trip this morning so I listened to that podcast. Holy cow, we got a good representative in Jace.Elliott!!!! It sounds as if he is very in tune with the deer herd here in iowa as well as the impact of the legislation!

Also sounds like trail cams on public. issue is going to come up again. As I think it should. Primarily for the same reasons he stated.

He did echo , the fact that forty percent of iowa bucks killed are year and a halfs. I was very surprised to hear that. Perhaps there is some merit there!

Yes, he said about 60% was 1.5 year old bucks in Northern Iowa and 20% in South Central if I remember correct.

Lack of cover, lack of deer, if you are deer hunting and see 1 deer you shoot it. Just so happens to be a young buck. If you pass you prob dont see another 1...

My family farm is in Pochahantas county. Literally the only cover is Farmstead groves, dredge ditches, crp, and an occasional wetland with a few trees.....

I do know there are some good areas up there A long some of the waterways. However , they are very tied up and don't make up the general hunting population.

WOW!!! He must not have read anything off of Iowa Whitetail especially the 42 page post!!!! “Manage for an over abundance of deer” “CWD approach is not doing anything different than normal herd management” ( Iowa DNR page says Iowa has CWD incentive hunts in four positive counties), “Hard to Say Less big bucks” because B&C is not something to follow( I agree that B&C not accurate but 42 pages on Iowa Whitetail I give some credence to), “Iowa has fantastic age structure” “ Iowa is in a balanced place right now” “current downswing in population is due to losing prairie land (CRP) in Iowa” (no mention of negative impact of EHD or liberal doe harvest.). CLEARLY suggests that the population, age structure and mature deer are in a “balanced place right now.”

I hope I eat crow but from those saying how great Jace is and how in tune to the problems we have may have been just watching his head shake implying yes to what you were saying and merely that rather than agreeing with what you were saying. Chase the regulation guys because there was no indication in that podcast that population will be increasing based on his podcast.

Pretty much sounded like a marketing add for how great Iowa is to hunt, didn’t hear one derogatory comment about the state of Iowa’s current deer hunting. “Iowa is land of giants and only Wisconsin has us beat”

I guess on a positive note the last five minutes were worth watching out of around a 65 minute podcast.

I’ll be honest that the 42 page post left some hope in my gut that at least a wide range of hunters on this site pretty much all agreed that we have a problem. And several great ideas to fix them but I have ZERO hope after watching that podcast.

Haven't watched the podcast...but...I have said a couple of times here that when I hear any Iowa DNR person talk about things today in a way that DOESN'T acknowledge the population AND quality drop...that person loses credibility in my eyes FAST.

Yes, there are still plenty of areas in this state where things are very good...but the suck is way too widespread now for someone to be reflecting an overall rosey picture.

Watch the podcast on YouTube. I’d be interested on opinions if I am off base.

Major takeaways
- no crossbows
- no increase in nr tags
- no guns during rut
- considerations of ehd kill offs when adjusting quotas
- in favor of a balanced herd
- in favor of quality over quantity

For a government official Im very glad to have him in place! Im not sure what he could have done better?

It's easy to bag on anyone/anything. I think it is fantastic he is holding the line. Take 2 or 3 things of my list above and watch how much harder we fall.

So right where we are today?

So right where we are today?
If I remember right, he wasn't asked what Iowa could change to be even better. I do remember him asking Jace why Iowa was better than everyone else. A good question would be to ask him what we can do different to be even better.

I doubt he is nieve and knows populations have been hit. There is a due process for everything. There is not a magic wand to wave and all is better.

What is your plan? (Keep in mind it needs to survive all the red tape on all sides of this (what most dont even know exists) issue.

All im getting at is dont hate on the guy that's on your side. Back him.

Hes in a position to do good and seems to me to have very good intentions.
