I have hunted all sorts of animals before from rabbits and squirrels to deer, but never turkeys. My dad wasn’t really into it when I was growing up so I never really got into it. About 4 months ago, my Nephew who is 11, told me that he would like to go Turkey hunting sometime. At first I didn’t think too much of it, but after some pondering I thought it would be neat to be able to take him on his first turkey hunt. I asked him if he would like to go this year and of course he said yes. I figured it would be a learning experience for both of us and give us some time to hang out. I bought myself and him some mouth calls to practice and we waited for the season to come. As time passed, I began talking to one of my coworkers about our plans. He was a veteran turkey hunter and offered to let me use all of his supplies from decoys to calls and even his blind. A few days after he made the offer, he asked if he could just come along and do all of the calling for us. I thought this was awesome and of course told him yes because he was probably our only realistic chance at getting a turkey. We were only able to make it out to the farm we were hunting one time before the day of the hunt and we only had one day to hunt. On the morning of the 24th, we got set up in a field at about 5:15. Almost immediately we heard gobbling and my nephew and I were getting pretty excited. Then the gobbling almost stopped completely and we waited. At about 6:45 a turkey let out a gobble and it was very close. I peeked out the window on the blind and there he was. My heart started to beat out of my chest as I informed my nephew and coworker of the situation. The turkey decided to walk out into the field behind us so we all had to turn our chairs around in the blind, close the front windows, and drop the rear window. The rear window came down, and there he was. I thought he might be a little far, but we decided to give my nephew the OK to take him. The gun went off and the turkey went down. The next 30 seconds is a little fuzzy as there was a lot of screaming and yelling and jumping around. Our first turkey hunt was over at 7:00 am. The day could not have been any better and now my nephew is hooked. I did let him know however that he might be a little spoiled and it wouldn’t always be this easy.
