Best Jobs

Hey all, I know you answered this question probably about 100 times on this website, BUT what is the best jobs to have if you're a deer hunter?

Coopman, does that mean you work for a co-op? I do, and it is probably the worst job you can have for a deer hunter. When the deer are rutting, farmers are busy as ever, and so is the co-op.

It's never to late. We are hiring now, have to be a Paramedic Specialist at hire.....you are a shoe in.....no psych test either. None of us would pass. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

No, my last name is Cooper.

Male Escort!
Up-side is, you work most of the time after dark and only couple days a week.
Down-side is the ladies are very old and not too attractive. (The above job being appropriate and legal of course). I wonder if you could get a college degree in Male Escorting (I'm sure Woman's Studies is what it's called?!?!)

OR, if that doesn't work, go into some kind of sales. Awesome schedule if you're good at it!

You can write off hunting trips as reference gathering, my mounts are written off as reference, etc... (and no, I do not "cheat" the tax system... most of my reference material is gathered while hunting)

I am working on making a living at this, which will give me more time to hunt... but it will be a few years yet. Oldbuck you still here?

I do to!! I complain about some of the hours but...ehhh. The only thing I miss out on is Spring Gobbler. I always take atleast 3 days off during the rut. I am always able to squeeze in weekend hunts and a few evening, or show up late and catch a morning hunt. I enjoy being out in the fields and also meeting new land owners!!

Working at a co-op, there is no better place to meet every landowner in a five county radius. I usually don't get much time for spring turkey, although this year I think I hunted at least a day in every season. Being a salesman, I get more time to hunt than the operation guys, but not much more. I have my vacation this year the last week of October and the first week of November, so I hope I get one down in that time period.

No easy answers here, in my book. Read the old thread and one guy summed it up best (I think)when he said you better choose a job you love, no matter what. I agree. Life is too short to spend all those hours toiling at something you hate, just so you can get some extra stand time.

Self-employment can be cool (I am), but it has drawbacks, too. Yes, in some jobs you get to dictate the schedule, but not if you're a service provider (my cousins and buddies are all self-employed builders and tradesmen). And remember, the minute you stop working, the dollars no longer come, and no one is getting your work done while you're playing. Plus, there's insurance and other big bills to pay, and that money comes out of your pocket.

That said, I'm a self-employed writer and I love my job. I get to see my wife and kids alot, I write about stuff I love to do (hunting) and I do dictate my own schedule, within reason. If its November, my butt's in a treestand...though I might have to come home and write til 1 a.m. to pay for my sins /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

There's a lot to be said for having at least some freedom in the fall. I used to be a teacher, and I loved it...except on those November mornings when a monster buck would chase a doe in front of the truck I was driving to ride herd over a bunch of pimply-faced 7th graders who didn't wanna be in my class. I swear, when one of those kids would whine "Mr. B., when are we ever gonna use this stuff in real life?" it was more than I could take. So tempting to say "Know what? Never! Class dismissed" /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Grasshopper... the quote I always use is FIND A JOB YOU LOVE, AND YOU'LL NEVER HAVE TO WORK A DAY IN YOUR LIFE.

I hear what your saying about being self-employed... my dad has owned a business for 30 years and now he's getting close to 60 yrs old and he is still the first one in to work every morning and the last one out, and there are many saturdays when he is in doing paperwork.

Well, I know it isn't mine. I repair commercial food equipment & am on call. I've been in a tree stand & had to go fix something that was broken all week, missed my sons confirmation at church, & have been somewhere every holiday except Christmas day. There has to be something better.

I think a grain farmer would be pretty good. Nothing like patterning a buck from the tractor /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

The two busiest times for a grain farmer are spring and fall. Grain farmers are planting crops during spring turkey and harvesting the crops during the rut. At least that was my experience, trying to farm around a day job. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

I guess you could wish for rainy weather so you could sit in your treestand. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif But when it's time to plant/harvest, you plant/harvest!

Not sure exactly what the best job would be as a hunter.

I do know I am going through a mid-life occupational crisis right now.

Pick a job that you like, and one that last through an economy like we are having right now.

Free trade didn't really turn out to be Fair trade.

If I had to do it all over again I would go into health care, pharmacy, or dentistry.

The bottom line is, if you make enough money, you can buy time.

But do you have to be miserable to make enough money? Than you have to ask yourself if it's worth it.

I detest my job. I could really ramble on this post but won't. Let's just say that a family that I provide for has me "trapped" in my life. I'm on holidays right now and spending more time dreading going back to that hole then enjoying time off.ain

If I had to do it again I'd have went into either biology or agriculture.
