Best time to hang your stands?

SCOFFIN

Miles Coffin
I mostly hunt public land, but am wanting to get an idea of when ya'll start to hang your stands? I know a lot of people frequent the area I hunt, so the deer are use to people there, but obviously where I hang my stands, there is not a lot of people traffic. Generally the deer are in these area's, so when is it the best time to go hang em'? I'd prefer some non 80-90 degree days to do it, but I'm thinking I'll have to get them out there in the next 2-3 weeks at a minimum. Also, this is state land, so I'm not sure if there is a time frame that it's legal to hang them or not. I don't think there is as there are stands out there year round that never get taken down. Mostly because they are junk, but you can tell nobody checks for them out there.

Thanks for the info.. It's getting close!! Trail cam pictures on this site are getting me fired up..

The sooner the better. This Saturday and Sunday the temperatures will be in the lower 80's. If you hung them in the morning it would be nice and cool. But that is all up to you. The sooner the better.

Here you go, this is directly from the DNR deer hunting regulations. Good luck with stand placement. When I am hunting public ground, I set up and tear down all in the same day.

Tree Stands
You may not construct a permanent tree stand on state public hunting areas. You may not drive or in any other way place any nail, spike, pin, or any other metal object into a tree on state public hunting areas to construct a blind or to provide hunting access to a location above the ground.
Tree stands may be left on a state public hunting area from 7 days prior to the start of a deer season until 7 days after the fmal day of that season.

I hang them the day I hunt, then take them down to hunt a new place the next day

You must not hunt on public land around a big city. If you hang it today, it would be gone tomorrow! You are way better off either taking it out after your hunt, or going to a climbing stand. But if you feel comfortable with your spot that your stand wouldn't get stolen, a week before would be plenty. I've moved stands in the middle of the day and shot deer that night. Use good wind and scent protection and you'll be good.

Sound like in your sistuation you better invest in a climber. On the state land around here we don't have much trouble with loosing a stand if it has a lock on it, But there are places that do. Here today gone tomorrow. Anyway, I personally hunt 95% private land and mine have been up for a month or more. Watch the regulations, some places they enforce more than others.

I hung 2 stands today, and will do about 6 more within the next 2 weeks. Meant to be earlier than this, but it's still a lot better than I've done in past years. It's a lot easier this year, because I hunted these farms last year for the first time, and now I know where and when they move in these areas.

I do hunt public land close to the big city and we went 50/50 last year with stands that stayed put and stands that walked away. Lost 2 of the 4. The 2 that went away had a ladder attached to them also, but the ones that we used portable climbing sticks stayed put. I may put one up soon. I think I'd have a case regarding the "Permanent" wording in the reg's, when the stand is considered portable and not fixed to the tree with screws or bolts.

A climber is in my future.

Can anybody recommend a machine/welding shop (around Des Moines) or individual that can make some custom parts for my stands? I have a new lock design in mind that I want to have made. It would require some welding and a metal lathe.

Thanks for all the replies..

I start when August roles around. I'll wait for the weather patterns to bring in some nice cool mornings and then hang stands on those days. I'll hang my funnel stands and early feed patterns this way; the rest, I'll hang and hunt the same day through season.

Hang'em around 20', padlock, and take your steps with. I've never had one stolen that way........yet.

If you hunt any of the Federal Land around the state, you have to pull your stands everyday.
