Best way to hunt whitetails in January?

I am from Utah and have never hunted Whitetails. I have a friend who will let me hunt his private property near Red Oaks. I did draw a non-res muzzeloader tag for this coming season. My question is what are some of the best ways to hunt with muzzeloader during the first part of Jan? The landowner has given me some ideas, but I always like to talk to the experts before I go on any hunt!

Pray for cold weather and a good food source, that is the key to late muzzleloader in my opinion. If you are into pushing deer, that can be effective to, but I would sit it out on a corn field or alfalfa depends on which one they are hitting.

Should have at least some cold weather during the late muzzy season. If we get it, you need a good food source, if there is corn around with a little snow and some cold weather you will have a good shot at a buck in that field.

Last year I harvested a buck in the middle of the timber however, this is an area that I have taken 3 bucks, a known funnel area between a nice feeding area and some bedding. That is always another good place to take one.
 
When you are sitting in the timber somewhere and food sources or travel route to a daily food source
 
Like some of the others have stated....set up along a corn/timber or hay/timber edge and get ready. I prefer building blinds out of tree limbs or setting up the pop-up in advace just to keep warmer. Those January mornings and afternoons can be nasty in the treestand. I hope and pray for cold temps and as much snow as possible. Regardless of the weather, find where they are feeding and you should have no problem filling a tag.
I've clobbered my fare share of late season deer this way.

And cover. After getting hammered during the previous hunting seasons, most bucks worth their salt will have found some form of sanctuary.

Come January in my neck of the woods, 95% of the deer herd is now on only about 20% of the properties. You better have the right spot or not even bother.
 
BIG DEEP CRP Fields near good food sources. That is if your after a monster and your willing to work to get him.
 
I've hunted minutes from Red Oak. I didn't see any big CRP fields or standing crops. Hopefully your friends land has some river front property , at least thats where they hang out from my experience. ( Nishnobotna river)There are some GOOD bucks around though. Good luck

Ditto x2...Nothing worse than an unseasonably warm January to mess with your season, IME.

That being said, anytime outdoors is time well spent. Hunt travel corridors close to bedding areas well into the late morning, and hunt the food sources in the afternoon/evening. The more white stuff on the ground the better
