So a buddy of mine called me up Friday and said he had a dream the night before that he was gonna catch a 20 pound flathead. I told him to keep dreaming. Well, at 4:00 Saturday morning my cell phones starts ringing off the hook. I finally get to it and get a message from him saying that he just landed the fish of a lifetime. He was right!

Tipped the scales at 50 pounds.

I had a feeling you would be the first one to respond to this.

He caught a 15 pounder last week, and had a 10 and a 12 in the boat with this one, but threw them back because he didn't want to mess with them and trying to keep this one alive long enough to get pictures.

I've got a couple scars thanks to this guys little brothers from noodling, but I've always been afraid of grabbin ahold of one this size.

Did he catch it on a bank pole or on rod and reel? That thing is a beast! Tell him congrats from me.

Rod and reel. He fought it for about 30 minutes before he finally landed it. It snapped the handle on his net like a tooth pick so he had to just drag it up into his boat.

That's big fish. Congrats to him.

I've got a special spot for big flatheads, but I usually only catch them around memorial day. Never caught one that big though.

Released or meal-time?

Right at 50 pounds. The current state record is 81 pounds and was only 3" longer than this fish. I can't imagine another 30 pounds on a fish this length. That thing must have been a pig!

Yeah, flatheads never stop growing, but for every inch they put on it's like 5-8 pounds of more once they get to a certain age. Helluva fish for sure. Tell him thanks for releasing it!

This fish was released to be caught another day.

Who would want to clean a fish that size anyway... you'd need a chainsaw and a wench to skin it!
Great fish... great picture and story!

I surely hope you are reffering to the mechanical version and not the female version.
