Bones n' Broadheads Blog: Calling in big bucks

Interesting..I like the fact that he says do not grunt blind. Only if you SEE a buck you want to pull in. Blind calling might make a buck that is on it's way curious enough to sneak around to scent check or visual check the source of the sound. But why is blind rattling different? I have never had any response from rattling. I did have reactions from grunting at bucks going by.

Still, also believe your local hunting area has a big impact on sucess of noise making,,scents,,etc. If the deer in your area have alot of bumps with hunters they are cautious to all these techniques. I remember when I used to go with an Elk guide in WY. He said,,even out there in the vast expanses,,back when hunters were thin you could bring in bulls to bugles. But when I was out there public land hunting was ramping up. He said bugling was about useless anymore. The Elk were wise.

Grunting and rattling are two totally different things. In my opinion, I use grunting to try and get a buck to close the distance. Grunting at a deer makes them more cautious and curious to check out the noise. Grunting shows there is another buck in the area.

When a buck is rattled in, there is a good chance they will come running in to see what all the noise is about. Rattling also implies that there could be a hot doe in the area.

Calling depends a lot on the deer's attitude. Each deer is different.

OK then,,I'll buy that. When should you rattle then? when you are bored,,each time out?Peak of rut? Might give those little plastic gizmos a try. always thot they were a joke actually, but never tried them.

The pack rack is awesome. I love it.

I would rattle more towards the middle of the morning or afternoon.....anytime the action is slow. A little rattling might get that big boy that is bedded down to see what is going on.

Well the action is slow ALOT,, in my area. But I wouldn't want to do it too much,,deer would get immune to the sound..
