Book Review – Conner's Big Hunt

I wanted to take the time to let you guys know about a book I recently read with my 4 year old son. I now have read it every night at least once and many times more for about the last month. It is a great book about bowhunting for children. It covers all the bases from safety, expectations and even helping landowners. It is a great message and written by a gentleman from Indiana named Shawn Meyer that is helping get the word out to get your kids involved in hunting. Do youself a favor and buy a copy and read it to your kids. My daughter is now wanting HER own copy because her brothers isn't good enough.

The story is very well written and wonderfully illustrated. Take some time look over Shawn's website to. A lot of good information and tips.

Limb Chicken,

Thanks for the review! If kids get excited about "Conner's Big Hunt" I know they'll get excited about hunting with dad. And that's the goal!

By the way, this summer the second book in the "Conner" series will be released. This time Conner gets in on a gobbler hunt.

Can't wait Shawn and welcome to the site. I think you will find several dedicated individuals here that are serious about getting kids involved in the outdoors. I can't wait for the next book.

I really liked the "tips for parents" part of the website

I'm afraid I wasn't the best mentor for my wife and snuffed out her interest.

These tips should be applied to the introduction of any new hunter.

I'll most likely be placing a book order soon.

That is a AWESOME NAME being my last name is CONNER and all. I should ask for royalties.

Shawn: How did you come up with the title of the book?

I've seen this book in the Legendary Whitetails catalog before and have thought about ordering it for my 2 year old. Now I'm definitely goning to get it! Thanks for the review.

Bwhntr4life,

My oldest son posed for the illustrations but his name is "Titus". A lot of people haven't even heard of "Titus" so I chose the name "Conner" because it is a popular name that isn't likely to go away anytime soon.

As far as the title itself, I was having trouble deciding between several working titles. In a meeting with the illustrator he pulled up the cover art and had inserted "Conner's Big Hunt" on it as his working title. I said, "Let's keep it."

The working title for the next book is "Conner's Spring Gobbler" but that could change. I'm really excited about the book's release. The illustrations are out of this world.

Hope you guys enjoy "Conner's Big Hunt" and I hope it opens up great discussions with your kids/grandkids.

I'm going to order it, it looks fantastic. I read to my little guys every night and the oldest (2 1/2) loves books. Not only does he love books he loves "daddy's bucks" on the wall. He even has his own little sheds that he proudly shows off while we're hanging out in the man cave. Kudos to you for writing the book and the great website. I'm going to order today.

Saskguy,

Got that order! Thanks and let me know what you think of the book.

I love your book idea. I have been fortunate enough to be able to take my two boys deer, turkey, pheasant, ram, squirrel and rabbit hunting. Nothing, but nothing can top that feeling in the field when something special happens with your kid. And, I don't mean just when they harvest an animal. I remember when Taylor went out during his first bow season. We didn't see much, but when we were walking across the bean field on the way out, he stopped, looked me in the eye and said, "Thanks for taking me hunting this morning, Dad. I had a blast". A simple comment, but it melted me. We have had some fun hunts since that day, but to me, that will always be my finest moment.

Thanks for what you do to promote getting kids involved in hunting. You have some great advice for parents on your website. I am fortunate enough to be starting a hunting and shooting program at a camp in central Iowa. We are starting an archery program next summer, and beginning this fall, we will teach a couple kids about hunting, and then take them out for a fall or winter deer hunt. A busy year, but I'm excited about it. Also, I'll show you my 'Take a Kid Hunting' treestand photo as soon as we get it back. Dads will love it, Moms will panic.

Looking forward to seeing that picture. Thanks too for all you are doing.

When I was single (early 20's), selfish and quite obsessed with my own hunting success I was mystified when a father told me about how fulfilling it is to hunt with his son. I just couldn't understand it. Why would you want to wreck your hunt by taking someone else along, especially a smelly kid who can't sit still and stay quiet?! A dozen years, a few nice bucks, and four kids can change the way you look at things. I've done a 180. It is truly one of my greatest joys to watch one of my sons' eyes light up with the excitement of seeing a deer or watching a duck come into the decoys. I wish more guys (especially dads) could experience it. And, as you implied, it's great for building those precious relationships. Keep up the good work CamoMan!

Got the book yesterday and read it with my oldest son, he loved the illustrations and I loved the message it conveyed. Kudos to you for a job well done. Right now I still may be that younger version of you that wants to chase them alone but I am truly excited to share my passion with both of my boys when they are a little older. Great job once again.

Huntwithakid, here is the photo I mentioned awhile back. Just got it back yesterday - it came out pretty good. These are the first of a few photos that I want to do for various 'Take a kid hunting' scenarios. The next one will be a turkey hunting scene. I've got some good ideas on pheasant and duck hunting situations as well.

By the way, I see you got a good write-up and review of your book in North American Whitetail. I hope that helps your book sales as well as promoting the hunting values you teach. Keep up the good work!

Great picture CamoMan! My wife asked, "Is that for real?"

I wasn't aware that North American Whitetail did a book review. Was that the latest issue?

Well, maybe you should define 'real'.

Yes, the baby is real - but was the baby actually up in the treestand? Well . . . form your own opinions. I set up these shots and worked out a very reasonable contract rate with a local professional photographer. I have one coming up later that I think shed hunters will like. Hoping to have about 6-8 different scenes and themes by spring. Some are for the 'take a kid hunting' theme, and others put a hunting twist on the Successories photos that are out there.
