Bow for my better half. *DELETED*

Re: Bow for my better half.

Doublerack, I had the same situation with my wife she's 6ft tall with a long draw as well and does not have much strength. Like you I don't want to spend a lot of money on a bow for her. In her case I know she would never want to go hunt with it so it would just be something for her to fool around in the back yard with while I'm shooting.

She spoke to Tiffany Lakoski at the last IBA banquet and Tiffany did say that she, as well as many other women shooters she knows, quickly increased the amount of draw weight they were able to pull in just a short amount of time. When you think about it you don't use a lot of those muscles every day and not in the same way as when pulling back a bowstring so they are naturally not very strong. From what I discovered finding a bow with lower poundage and a long draw length isn't a problem but not many have a draw weight adjustment range of more than 10 pounds.

I would say one idea would be to go to a bow shop and see just exactly how much weight she can pull right now and start her out on a bow that has a weight range with that as the minimum. With enough shooting I think she will quickly be able to pull the max poundage of that bow and then you can look at trading it in or selling it and buying another bow for her with a higher draw weight range.

Ebay usually has lots of used bows for sale if they don't have any at the pro shop and you can probably resell one on there a few months later for close to the same price you paid for it.

A good resource to try for finding models that offer the right draw length and poundage range is Hunters Friend they can give you suggestions and may be able to offer you ideas on any models that have greater draw weight adjustment ranges.

Re: Bow for my better half.

Thanks Monster. I'll have to think of some exercises for her to do. I was thinking, maybe she could try a recurve for staters?

Re: Bow for my better half.

Quit messing around and buy her a bow that fits her needs NOW! Do it ASAP and she might be ready to hunt by Oct 1.

My wife has shotgun hunted and taken a few deer. She stopped hunting around 12 years ago to tend to the kids while i was hunting. Now that the kids are big enough to fend for themselves, this year she wants to muzzlelaoder hunt and has already put me on notice that within the next two years she wants to bowhunt.

Bottom line, if the girls a "keeper" get her involved!

These are all great suggestions. But here's one more, stop refering to her as your "old lady", or else it may be a little hard for you to hunt this year with a foot where the sun don't shine!

Trust me on this one!

"I swear honey, the guys on the forum said if you do this it would make your bow muscles stronger, honest!"

Re: Bow for my better half.

If I really wanted to make her angry, I could just tell her " I bet Tiffany can pull a 50lb bow"
I know for a fact I'd be sleeping on the couch then.

So tell me supertec, are we to assume that men and women of different sexual prefences don't shoot bow?

Re: Bow for my better half.

definately get to a shop and get her fitted. get her to shoot as many diferent bows as possible. then hit ebay and the classifieds on archery talk, there are some great bargains in those, especially for women's/youth bows. if you get a bow with 50 pound (max) limbs, you can drop the pounds to 40....still enough to take a deer. she can increase the pounds as her muscles progress. the good thing about her long draw lenth, is that she can shoot the top model bows, not a scaled down version.
get out, hit the shops, and start searching online. if she can pull 35-40 pounds, then she can hunt this fall. there is only 2 MONTHS until bow opener. that doesn't leave much time to practice. start hitting those 3d courses!!!

I hunt by myself, choose my own gear, scout my own locations, hang my own stands, and gut and butcher my own deer. Maybe someday she will be asking you if you want to go hunting with her..?

Best of luck to both of you.

Re: Bow for my better half.

Thanks to Central Iowa Archery who got my girlfriend fitted with a nice bow. Finally a bow that has a 29" draw with a low enough draw weight. She loves it! She got it sighted in and is a natural. As long as she keeps her nerves, she'll slay a few does and hopefully a good buck this year.
Oh, and for those of you who may have seen her at CIA on Saturday, you should see the bruise on her arm. It's a good one

Re: Bow for my better half.

That is great! Hope she has fun with it.
