Bowhunting accuracy test

I think it's an alright idea... hell we all have to take both a written exam and field test to drive an automobile for the first time, so why not a bow/gun?

I don't think we need an annual test however. If you want to talk about some added pressure to hit a 9 in circle at 20 yds, imagine if you had to take the test with 30 other bowhunters, waiting their turn, watching

I think most if not all of the Management Hunts have proficiency tests, gun or bow. One gun Management hunt, also in our area, requires this but I think they are 40 yards. Also, it is one time, not annual. Once you pass, you are in.

I don't like the slob hunter but do not like this idea either whether it is for gun or bow.

I really don't like the idea for having a test for bowhunters. At the range, I would definitly be able to put 5 arrows in a 9" circle at 20 yards. When I'm 16 foot in a tree and have a buck chasin a doe, I hate to say, I get EXCITED. If I didn't I would probably quite bow hunting. I sometimes make a less than perfect shot, but I keep it at a minimum by not shooting at game to far or any "ify" shots.

There are probably more deer lost due to the actions after the shot and from shot selection than from shot accuracy. Too many can't wait for a high percentage shot angle or can't resist the urge to start tracking too soon. I don't think getting the government involved will solve the problems.
 
I take the test every year. You would probably find it amazing how many people "choke" under pressure of being watched while taking the test. It's really not a big deal if you are visiting a qualifying bow shop and pack the bow along. I think the certification is a good thing.

exactly!!! waaayyy too many injured deer from running shots in the shotgun seasons. im not saying its only from that cause i know everyone makes a bad shot at some point. but the majority of the deer wounded during shotgun seasons are from running shots from guys that are just throwing lead out there. i killed 3 deer this year that had perviously been hit... 2 of which was the reason i decided to take the deer. one of them was a 2 1/2 year old buck that had nice potential but i stumbled upon him without him seeing me (at 5 yards btw) and i could see blood down his side and 3 holes in him (in his neck, top of his back and hip). turns out there was 2 more bullet holes in him. normally i would not have taken that deer and let him grow up... but seeing that he would have been dead later on that day anyway... i decided to put him out of his missery.

i think the accuracy test would be better off for guns but bow would be nice as well. for the people that oppose it... why? if you can pass it then you have nothing to worry about and it wont affect you. but if you are worried about it... is that because you are worried about not passing it????

An accuracy test does not solve the problem of people taking marginal or unethical shots. A few rounds or arrows at a target does not equate to creating an instant ethical hunter. I am not concerned about passing a test. I am concerned about bring additional government regulation into hunting. I am a firm believer in regulations to control herd size and to maintain a healthy population of all game, but adding regulations to control how and who qualifies as a hunter is one more step toward increased firearm and archery restrictions. I do not worry about the test. I do worry about the rest of the iceberg that follows the tip.

Would it be extremely annoying to set aside time in my already busy schedule to take the test? Yes

Do we need to regulate everything? No

Would this prevent slob hunting? No

Would your 12 year old crack under pressure and not be able to hunt with you? Maybe

I think we have enough regulations in hunting and life in general anymore. Keep hunting simple. I also probably would not have passed the test with regularity my first 15 years of bowhunting with a recurve. However, I was still highly effective
in the woods killing multiple animals yearly.

So I guess I would vote no.
