I was in the stand this moring a little before 8 when 2 does and 3 yearlings came to within 20 yards. I was already standing and ready to draw back when the crunch of my empty water bottle in my front pocket alerted the deer something was not right. They instantly stopped and we had a stare down. I ended up losing. They weren't spooked they just turned around and left after doing a whole bunch of foot stops trying to figure out what the heck was in that tree. A few times I thought they were going to preceed towards me and I'd be able to burn my antlerless tag, but they would always look back up. I was wondering if anyone knows if deer can see your breath. I think that may have been the deciding factor in them not continuing down their trail of doom. I was breathing real heavy and noticed that I could see my breath real easily. Does anyone know?
 
I am betting that they were continually scanning to see what they knew was there after hearing the water bottle crinkle.

If you can see your breath, they can see it, especially since their eyesight is better than ours to begin with. Do they associate it with human? Who knows but my bet is they know something awfully big is up in a tree by them!

I always thought that deer had poor eyesight.
 
Depends how you define "very well"

The position of a deers eyes gives them almost 360 degree vision but it comes at a price...IE, they have no depth perception. That's why camo clothing or just being in the shawdows works so well for pursuing them. They are very keen to detect movement but that has nothing to do with the eyes. It's how the survival part of their brain is wired.
On the other hand, our own vision doesn't come even close to 360 degrees, but we have excellent depth perception, plus see in color.
If I have a choice as to which of a deers senses I can most easily fool, it's sight.
And as stated before, the deer definitely seen your breath.
