Brooklins first deer

After many years of tagging along with me to the deer woods, Brooklin decided 2016 was the year she would try to shoot one herself. Using a light load in my savage smokeless muzzleloader she proved to be a pretty darn good shot during pre season practice.
We were unable to get a good shot opportunity during youth season with limited chances to hunt. We decided to wait for 2nd season gun and hope for some cold temps. Our wish was granted with the weather and even got a little snow to help. We headed out of the door and made the short walk to the blind. After watching a few fawns feeding a young buck came out of the trees and started to feed at 50 yds. A few tense moments later Brooklin squeezed the trigger. I heard the thump of the impact and watched the buck mule kick and then almost fall before making it to cover.
Excitedly we walked back to the house to eat supper before going to look for the deer. We returned about an hour later and to our surprise we couldn't find a drop of blood in the snow. We started combing the area but in the dark its tough to find a deer with no blood trail. I was pretty sure he was hit good but the lack of blood was making me nervous. After about 45 minutes of searching mom comes to the rescue and finds the deer about 50 yds from the shot opposite the direction he was headed when we last saw him.
It was a perfect heart shot with a clean pass through but hardly a drop of blood outside the deer.

Congratulations to both of you. I too spend time in the woods with my daughters, and we are truly fortunate to have girls that are interested in being in the outdoors and spending time with their dads!
