Buck in the fence

Driving home today I happened to look over at what I thought was a dead deer laying by the fence...to my surprise it was a very much alive buck! He had jumped the barbed wire fence and caught his hind leg...and you know how well that works! Not far from home so I went on home and left a message with our CO and called the sheriff's office. Wasn't my land, brand new fence...or I would have just snipped it. Went back later after someone drove by and I saw tracks and the deer was gone. Didn't want to see it suffer but I wasn't crazy about getting my teeth kicked out either. Wish I would have had my camera though. Deer and barbed wire don't mix well!

You witnessed something that is pretty uncommon! How big of a buck was it? I have never seen a deer caught in a fence, but I once found a coyote that had just recently died that got caught in a fence.

I have "harvested" two deer within the last three years that were hung in the fence. They were somewhat new fences and they were young deer, not sure it there is a correlation there. Maybe the older does have learned where to cross and their young aren't getting hung up as much.

In the trip home theme, I had to slam on the brakes tonight to avoid smashing a deer. It came off one of those high bank fencelines along the road, where they hit once in the ditch before bounding onto the road. Luckily, my squealing tires caused it to turn back.
Hopefully this doesn't hijack your post

If this one would have been a doe, I would have just put it in the freezer but it was a young buck (6 pt I think)
I personally see one to two dead deer every year hung in fences...or what's left of them after the coyotes get done with them.
My wife comes home from work after dark every night and she say's they are really "packing up again"

(to funny...but I thought it best not remind her that deer herd...not pack!!)
At any rate...so much for lowering the deer herd...I guess I better have the brakes checked because it looks like we'll be dodging the deer "packs" again
